Over the past four years, the Newsletter has gotten most of its contributions from the Northeast SARE project to develop sustainable apple production, and a similar project for ecosystem-based orchards in the Middle Atlantic states. The Newsletter's goal is to serve as a means of relatively rapid and informal information exchange on the topic of sustainable apple production techniques. The Newsletter is aimed at growers, marketers, researchers and consultants involved in apple production and sales. The format of articles is varied, though the intent is to communicate with a broad range of professionals and interested readers. All relevant material is welcome, from a short paragraph to several pages. Several areas are appropriate: * All aspects of production of disease resistant apple cultivars. * Methods of pest management including IPM, biocontrol, cultural control. * Alternative marketing strategies for apples. * Mixed cropping systems for apples with other plants and animals. * Storage or post-harvest treatment. * Descriptive work on orchard ecosystems. There are undoubtably other topics which would contribute to more sustainable apple production. Please submit them. We plan to publish a Spring and Fall issue each year, and accept articles at any time. Deadline for the Fall issue is 15th September, and for the Spring issue is 15th February (Deadline for Spring '94 is March 1). Submit articles to: Daniel R. Cooley, Editor Dept. of Plant Pathology Fernald Hall University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA 01003 FAX 413-545-2532 If possible, send a diskette including a Word, WordPerfect 5.1, or 'text' version of the article. If there are illustrations or graphs, they should be submitted as separate pages for each graphic and should also be submitted on disk in TIFF or WPG formats if possible. The Northeast Sustainable Apple Production Newsletter is available to the public at no charge as part of the educational outreach effort funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Research and Education Program, Northeast Region. Sample copies of the Newsletter are available from the editor. **************** jclement@moose.uvm.edu AKA Jon Clements Plant & Soil Science Dept.
