I've raised free-range layers for two years and had no problems with my own mix that the local feed mill makes up for me. My own recipe is slightly different since I have an animal nutritionalist who lives next door, (which I'd forward, but can't find right now) but it is similar to this one from a book called "The Real Dirt -- Farmers tell about Organic and low-imput practices in the Northeast" from Northeast Region SARE/ACE, Hills Building, University of Vermont, Burlington VT 05405 Phone: 802-656-0471. Layer mix: Cracked Corn 58 percent Soymeal 30 percent Oyster shell 5 percent Lime 4 percent Layer minerals 3 percent This makes a 16 percent protein food. This recipe, which is in the book, comes from Many Hands Organic Far, RR2, Sheldon Road, Barre, MA 01005 and a 12-page poultry packet is available from them for $5. Good luck -- I really had a hard time finding a mill that would mix in small amounts. I ended up buying in 1000 lb. loads and finally 1 ton loads, which even then I had to pick up.
