From hollyb@ncatark.uark.edu Wed Aug 11 10:56:36 1999 Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 08:38:23 +0000 From: Holly Born To: riaanb@iafrica.com, sanet-mg@ces.ncsu.edu Subject: Tender larval care-maggots Riaan and everyone: I spent a week at the Songhai Centre while I was in the Peace Corps (Togo) and learned their maggot raising system. I brought it back to the farmers in my village and it was VERY successful. They were raising various types of poultry and fish (tilapia, catfish, and some native species) and found the maggots to be an excellent source of free protein. I would be very interested in hearing about any problems people have encountered in using maggots as feed. I fed my own flock of chickens and guineas on maggots and they did very well. I can say from my own experience and the experience of some 30 farmers that none of our animals seemed to suffer any adverse effects from it and neither did anyone who ate the fish or poultry.
