I recently got a copy of Public Law 90-492 that supposedly permits on-farm processing without federal inspection, for up to 1,000 birds. Unfortunately, this law is pretty difficult to translate without a lawyer. Has anyone written a short synopsis of what the laws really allow or disallow? I would sure love a copy. I also need to know more about where state laws fit in, and how to know which laws take precedence. In discussion with State and Federal officials in my own state of Kentucky, I have been told that it is illegal to sell any poultry that has not been federally inspected. That would be okay if there was a federally inspected plant in the state that would take small numbers of birds from independant growers, but that is not the case. What is the recoures for the small farmer who wants to raise specialty chickens for the community? I would appreciate any response from anyone who has experience in this area.
