It is small enough (about 9 inches long) to fit in a pouch on your belt, yet very versatile. You can dig holes for planting out starts with it (hori hori is Japanese for dig dig), you can weed with it, measure planting distances, cut with it, and of course, look very cool with it. In my opinion it is a must have for every gardener. A friend of mine from Portland, Oregon gave it to me and I use it all the time. Basically, it's a right angle garden spade that I use for digging ditches, breaking up clods, weeding pesky perennials, making furrows, etc. It has a spade handle and while the "blade" part welded at right angles. Maybe they are common on the west coast but I've never seen one in the east or midwest. If you interested I could probably seen you a photo. Good luck on your project. BCS, the Italian made rear tine tiller has a number of attachment (many only available in Europe) and they make a mini-combine that fits the BCS. Could you team up with some other local small farmers and purchase a combine together or hire a neighbour to combine your grain? Our local certifying association has formed a spelt growers co-op and purchased a grain threshing machine. Different screens are available for various seed sizes and its suitable or cleaning vegetable seeds as well. Anne
