John 14:9 EIMI (was John 8:58)

Dear Steve and Bill,

There has been considerable emphasis on examples in the GNT on whether or
not EIMI, when used with an adverbial phrase indicating past time, should be
copulative or "timeless." "Lack of examples" is frequently cited as a
rejection of alternatives. But there are parallels to support such
alternatives. I would appreciate your comments specifically on the parallels
that were surfaced earlier in the thread.

On Thu, 23 Dec 1999 16:50:32 EST, Greg Stafford addressed the point about
"examples":

>>McKay is the only one of these grammarians to actually translate John
8:58.
He does so as follows, "I have been in existence since before Abraham was
born." ... <snip for brevity>
uses of EIMI as an extending-from-the-past present. If so,
then we could cite at least two examples from the NT (Joh 14:9; 15:27) and
at
least four from the LXX (Ge 31:38, 41; Jg 16:17; Ps 90:2). <<

To take just one of these examples, how would you translate the present
'form' of EIMI used with a past-time clause at John 14:9?

TOSOUTWi CRONWi MEQ hUMWN EIMI

Sincerely,
Wes Williams
