Not to speak for Carl, but the participle can certainly function in an
adverbial manner (I suspect that is what you mean by "have a meaning of an
adverb"). The use of an adverbial participle is one of the most challenging
areas of NT Greek grammar. In this example it could display the manner (the
internal attitude of the individual) of not loving money, or it could
possibily the result of setting aside the love of money, or even the means
of achieving this separation from the power of money by contenting
yourselves.
