BDAG, the new Bauer, makes reference to etymologies through extensive
references to Pierre Chantraine, Dictionnaire Etymologique de al Langue
Grecque: Histoire des Mots, Nouvelle Edition avec Supplement (Paris:
Klincksieck, 1999), which is now in a one volume edition (ISBN
2-252-03277-4). Chantraine's article on QEOS includes the information given
by Daniel Riaņo Rufilanchas and a bit more but concludes that the origin of
the word is unknown.
