One of the things I try to keep in mind (and this is NOT the whole story)
is that certain words naturally are NOT continuous.
For example,
I run for health reasons. (`run' is a continuous activity.)
This guy stops right in the middle of the street! (one can not
continually stop)
In other words, one of the details to keep in mind when analyzing verbs is
the interplay between tense/aspect and lexical semantics.
