In appendix V of his comentary on the Epsitles of John for the Anchor Bible
Series, Raymond Brown provides the following structure:
Opening Formula
Sender
Addressee
Greeting
Remembrance or Health wish
Thanksgiving
Body
Open formula
Body
Closing formula
Concluding formula
Farewell or Good Health
Not all elements are present in all letters. Brown also notes some of the
special features of the Pauline style and how the Johanine letters fit this
pattern.
