It seems to me that it is sometimes difficult to determine with certainty
whether a sentence in Greek is intended to be declarative or a question,
unless there is an interrogative particle of some kind, or unless the local
context makes it fairly clear what the rhetorical function of the sentence
is.
1 Cor. 11:14-15 has traditionally been analyzed as a question (specifically,
a negative rhetorical question). One new English version (the ISV), however,
translates these verses as a declarative, which gives the verse a very
different meaning from that of traditional exegesis.
Do any of you on this list find any syntactic or contextual clues that would
cause you to lean strongly toward analyzing these verses as either a
question (even if rhetorical) or a declarative?
