Programs
Preschool story time is held every Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. We
will have a Halloween program in October. Call (510) 620-6567 later in
October for details.
We are looking at our role in offering homework assistance. Individual
attention seem to work best, though this puts a strain on staffing. Last year
this service was not in high demand. Possibly because of the railroad tracks,
school age children have difficulty getting from school to the West Side
Library. People interested in assisting children by walking children to the
Library from Washington School on weekday afternoons please contact the
library.
West Side Branch hours are Monday and Tuesday 12:00-7:00, and Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday 12:00-5:00.

Automation Is Near
West Side Branch is preparing for automation by weeding the collection
and taking an inventory of holdings.

Staffing
We are glad to welcome Janet Pagel, the new Library Assistant at West
Side Branch. She replaces Catherine Nichols, temporary Library Assistant,
who is now at Main as a part-time Librarian. Both Lynn and Janet received
permanent assignments and are happily settling into their new jobs. Please
come by, introduce yourself, and tell us how we can be of service. The
Richmond Public Library Motto this year is "Community First."

Reading is a Magical Trip
So far we have 65 children participating in the game, and eight grand
prize winners. There is still time to win prizes. Come Join the Magical
Yellow School Bus and start reading. Parents: if your child is of pre-school
age they can still participate when you read to them. The last day to
collect prizes is September 25, 1994.

More Adult New Books:
Fear of Fifty, by Jong, Gift by Steel , Playing for the Ashes, by
George, Royal Murder by Roosevelt, Agenda by Woodward, Dixie City Jam by
Burke are hot new titles available at West Branch. On order are new books by
Marlon Brandon, Jackie Collins, Patricia Cornwell, Dick Francis, Nadine
Gordimer, James Heller, Larry King, Stephen King, Robert Parker, Anne Rice,
Sidney Sheldon, and James Michener.

Lawyers in the Library
Since 1992 Richmond Public Library and members of the local legal
community have worked together to provide free legal consulting services to
low income residents. The attorneys donate up to 20 minutes to each person
on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sign-ups
begin at 5:45 and 6:00 p.m. Names are drawn and are seen in that order. The
location is the Main Library, 325 Civic Center Plaza. Call (510) 620-6561 to
confirm hours on the scheduled afternoon.
