The 18th pick in the draft belongs to the Milwaukee Bucks. This
pick was obtained from the Orlando Magic. The Bucks received
the Magics first round pick and Anthony Cook for Anthony Avent.

Since the Bucks have already had a pick, they will not be providing
a complete team analysis again, simply an analysis of the pick.
The Bucks are again represented by:

  Bobby Davis

and he selects: Brian Grant, PF, 6-8. Xavier ============================================================ DRAFT ANALYSIS - Milwaukee Bucks ================================ TEAM NEEDS ---------- The Bucks' needs may be summed up easily with three words: size, Size, SIZE! They allowed 103.4 points per game last year, which put them in the middle of the pack. However, this is partly due to game pace - a closer look at the numbers shows that only the Mavericks and Bullets allowed opponents to shoot for a higher percentage than did the Bucks, at 49.1%. The only true center on the roster at season's end was the ancient (and now ineffective) Mike Gminski. Vin Baker blocked 114 shots, but no one else on the squad had more than 55. They also ranked 17th in total rebounding percentage. Typical Bucks' luck - in a year in which they have the first draft pick, none of the three best players in the draft are dominant centers. Note: I have taken the liberty of omitting the position-by-position analysis because it was included with the Glen Robinson pick. If anyone needs it for any reason, you can find that post in the newsgroup or contact me via e-mail and I'll send a copy to you. MY SELECTION: ------------- Brian Grant, F, Xavier. Grant has had an outstanding college career, as he developed nicely as a shotblocker and rebounder while under Pete Gillen. He is a bit undersized at 6'9" and will have to play power forward instead of center in the pros, but his long arms and good timing make him play bigger than his actual size. With Robinson and Grant, the Bucks have a promising future at the forward slots. These picks would allow them to shop Kenny Norman and Blue Edwards to upgrade the center or two-guard position. OTHERS CONSIDERED: ------------------ I was going to take Jim McIlvaine if he slipped this far, but he went one pick too early. His shotblocking skills would have made him an excellent pick. I seriously considered Eric Mobley and it came down practically to a coin toss. I decided on Grant over Mobley because Mobley strikes me as the next Felton Spencer (a foul-prone, no-offense center). While Spencer is certainly a useful player, he is not the kind of player who can take a team to a higher level. Grant has more long-term potential, IMO, and could turn into a Horace Grant type with some bulking up and experience. I looked at both Temple guys (Jones and McKie), but they are slashers and the Bucks have plenty of slashers already - if they were going to upgrade the two-guard slot, they should do it with someone who can add the outside shooting threat the team currently lacks. I picked Grant over Bill Curley because Grant is more athletic, although I think Curley will be a decent NBA role player. Rejected Deon Thomas, although he has reasonable shot- blocking ability, because of the rumors that he is smaller than his listed 6'9". I am unconvinced that he will be much of a player in the pros. WHO THEY'LL PROBABLY TAKE: -------------------------- McIlvaine, if he slips far enough. Otherwise, look for them to take the best front-court player available. The best outside shooter in the draft is Wesley Person, and he'll be gone before this pick, so they're stuck with Todd Day for another year at two-guard. OTHER MOVES: ------------ As mentioned earlier, if they pick two forwards in the draft they'll have some surplus at that position. They may also try to move up in the draft in order to have a shot at Montross, Wright, or McIlvaine. ======================================================================== Draft Summary: 1.
