Poop:

Kidd is a very strong very aggressive player with a feel for the game
that's rare. Sees things in slow motion or something because he just
knows where everybody is at all time. Close to ambidextrous which is a
  huge advantage for a PG.

Strengths: very powerful for a guard, lifted weights after his
freshman year and got stronger without losing any noticable quickness.
Great vision, sees everything, great hands, like Clyde Frazier on
defense, can strip anybody at any time. Remarkable passer, handles the
ball well and goes to the hole with authority. Good athlete but not in
Murray's class as a leaper. Has all the intangibles, smart player,
works hard at his game, wants to win.

Weaknesses: shooting plain and simple, he's not a good shooter, he's
much better than he used to be, but he still needs to improve his
outside shot, shot off the dribble, and his freethrows. Tends to make
great moves to the hoop but not finish them off, with his strength, he
should be able to finish more. Not blinding quick, NBA PG's who are
might bother him(although Stoudamire and Edney bothered him, he
outplayed them both head to head). Early in his career Jason played in
spurts and was a bit lazy at times, he shed this in his sophomore year
and played hard the whole time. Must show he can run a half court
offense in the NBA, Cal never did it well while he was there(or before
  him for that matter).

  Jason's a can't miss star, if his shooting improves he's a superstar
and future hall of famer. The only PG in the NBA with more potential
is Penny Hardaway who's bigger, a better athlete, and a better
shooter, but Kidd is stronger, better defensively and probably a
better passer too. They should be dueling for the next 10 years or so.
If Kidd is there at #3 I'd be shocked.

More Poop:

Possibly the most gifted non-UCLA center player in the Pac-10. Led
nation in assists as soph, led pac-10 as frosh. Voted frosh of the
year in 92-93. (National) Pac-10 player of the year, All American.
Also was in the top ten in steals last year and this one.

Doubts: Shooting, not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, shot 36%
from 3-pt. range this year, and started hitting free throws down the
stretch as well. Also has a tendancy to force things, especially in
the half court game. Also some tendancies to make spectacular move,
then miss the layup. Has trouble finishing.

However, there are no doubts about his desire and talent. Arguably a
better passer than Magic Johnson(gasp!), a student of the game. Gives
100% at all times on the court. Is able to dominate a game, without
  scoring.

Poop:

He's a short *shooting* (0ff) guard who was a High School
All-American. Until the arrival of PG Damon Stoudamire (always
considered the #2 PG in the US, behind J. Kidd), he never lived up to
his promise. This year, he really bloomed, both on D and O, giving
Ariz. the best backcourt since Mayberry/Day a couple of years back.
He is a consistent shooter, not a bad passer (but not even close to
good enough to be #4), and extremely strong, so his strong pt. is his
finishing ability. Due to his size, it will be tough in the NBA, but
if he's paired with a tall PG, then he should be able to switch
  effectively on D.

The big thing here is that he is a SG, not a PG. He never played PG,
and this year it was Stoudamire's show against any kind of pressure --
Reeves is not a good enough ball handler to handle the pressure of an
  Arkansas or UK.

More Poop:

Strengths: Excellent penetrator, much better than average shooting.
Has ability to score at will, at times unstoppable. Plays better than
average defense, with quick hands. Has three point shooting range, and
  is a hard worker.

Weaknesses: Inconsistant scoring, runs hot and cold at times. At 6'2"(?)
some question whether he has size to play 2, or ball handling ability
  to play one.

Skinny: Good mid-lat1st round choice for a team who needs a guard off
the bench, who can swing between the 1 and 2.

Poop:

BJ Tyler is one of the best point guards to come out of the SWC in
several years. He is an excellent ball-handler and makes good
decisions in the fast break. He also seemed to do pretty well in a
half-court offense, although we didn't see much of that at Texas. His
speed is good, although not outstanding, and he plays pretty good
defense. He never had any chronic injury problems at Texas either.
His weakness is his shooting. He's a complete streak shooter, and
when he starts off a game shooting bad he'll often have trouble
snapping out of it. Part of this was the fact that he was the focal
point of the Texas offense and didn't really have anyone to pass it to
if the shots weren't going down. That probably won't be the case in
the pros, but it's still his major drawback. His fairly dismal
performance in the tournament this year is going to be sticking in
people's minds, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him slip quite a
ways. The other potential knock on Tyler is that he's already spent a
summer at the John Lucas clinic. According to most everyone around
here, it was a minor marijuana problem and Tyler's gotten his act
together, but the ghosts of Roy Tarpley and Richard Dumas, combined
with his inconsistant shooting may be enough to drop him into the
  mid-to- late first round.

His NBA value should still be pretty high though. He's perfectly
capable of running a pro offense, just as long as he is not expected
to be a strong scorer too. Best case scenario is that he becomes the
next Mookie Blaylock - bringing the ball down and using his excellent
passing to get the ball to a Manning or Willis down low, and taking an
occasional three to keep the defense honest. Worst case scenario is
that he gets drafted by a really bad team that expects him to be a
scoring machine, he cracks under the pressure, and makes a quick exit
to the CBA. Take Tyler if you've got the scoring and just need a
solid PG to run the offense.

Scout: Chris Tutt

More Poop:

B.J. is a gunner, first and foremost. However, he's one of the
quickest point guards in this year's draft. He is a good penatrator
and has good range on his jumper. He spent some time during his
senior year in John Lucas's rehabilatation clinic. Which is why I
think he'll be drafted by the Spurs at pick #22.

Poop:

Ward had a difficult senior year do to his late return from football,
and due to the general suckyness of the rest of the team. Ward did not
get into full basketball shape untill around mid-february. The biggest
stink about Ward as a pro is that he wants to play both footbal and
hoops. Most owners want him to choose one or the other...the NFL
having made the decision for him more or less. Ward was not considered
a top prospect at point due to his performance this year, but
considering he has not played a full season of hoops in three years,
it is excusable. Ward's primary weakness has been his lack of offense,
and he is not too great at the free throw line either. These, I
believe can be rectified if he were to go full time in the sport. He
does have excellent range for the three point shot, however. His
primary strenghts are his leadership and his defense. He has been
critical in the success of the Seminole basketball program as a
calming influence on the court, a quality which can very easily be
translated to the pro ranks. On defense, Ward is simply tenacious,
with very quick hands and feet...a master of the pick-pocket. Most
importantly, he is a true point guard, not a shooting guard forced
  into it.

Any pro team needing a true point guard, a leader, and a bulldog on
defense would do well to take Ward. Also, Ward has always been a
winner, and knowing how to win might just be the most important thing
he can bring to any team. Would best fit into a fast-paced,
defensively oriented team...I hear the Nicks need a point guard, and
the Spurs, and the Magic...well, you get the idea. The potential for a
very long and productive career is there with Ward.

"Hedake" Smith (so nicknamed by his mother because he was a very
hyperactive kid and would run around banging his head against
everything) reminds me of a cross between Rumeal Robinson and Vernon
Maxwell. Built like Robinson (ie: 6'2, but solid as a Mack truck) he
guns like Maxwell, and, like Maxwell, is capable of huge scoring
tears. He played SG for most of his career, but was forced (by
injuries, I think) to play PG this year, and although he showed
himself a capable point, again like Robinson, he's not a natural, and
prefers to shoot than pass. At ASU this year, this was probably a
good policy, as the squad was thin and needed his scoring, and
actually ASU did better than expected and pulled off a couple of
upsets behind his shooting. He played mega minutes too, as the club
just didn't have an outside threat with him off the floor, but, living
up to his childhood rep., he never flagged. He has massive heart,
obviously hates losing, and was a definite leader for the Sun Devils.
Because of his strength, I think he could play 2G in the pros, despite
his lack of height, and with work he could turn out to be a Terry
Porter type (another player he resembles physically, although Hedake
is easily faster than Terry.) I doubt he'll ever be a good team's
starting point, but is a second round steal for any team wanting a
Robert Pack (boy, the comparisons just keep coming) type spark off the
bench who can gun you in or out of a game. If he fails in the pros,
it won't be for lack of guts or effort, it will likely be through
being a "tweener." Gets himself up for the big games, too - I think
he scored 40 in a game against Arizona this season. I actually liked
him better than the more heralded Damon Stoudamire, a similar player.
Should go high second round or perhaps even low first.

Poop:

Derrick Phelps had a great senior season. He ran the UNC offense
better then he ever had before, he cut is turnovers way down and
had a great assist to TO ration (2.25). He shot better then he
ever had before (49% overall and 37% from three point land). He
did get hurt in the second Clemson game and he lost some quickness
on defense and seemed to lose confidence in his shot.

Phelps has never really looked comfortable shooting the outside
shot, its not that he does not have a nice looking shot, its that
he just does not look like he wants to shot. Form wise, Phelps is
just fine (in his first three years, Phelps kind of drifted on his
shot, but not this year). Phelps does take the ball to basket rather
well and got most of his points this way. Phelps alos looked a lot
better running the break this year. In his soph. year, this was a
real problem but watching him last year was hardly like watching the
  same player.

Defense is, and will always be, Phelps forte. He played great D
on Grant Hill twice this year. Can just take opposing point guards
out of the game. UNC's switching defense really did not allow Phelps
to show as much as he could going one-on-one. He will get this chance
  in the pros.

Phelps is projected as a late first rounder and will hopefully get
picked by someone like the Spurs who play good team D and really
won't need Phelps for his scoring.

Autry worked hard to improve his ballhandling and leadership and it
really paid off in a big senior year. Autry is not a real good shooter

Well, I honestly believe that Tracy is too small to make it in the
NBA. They list him at 6 feet, but he is closer to 5'10", in my
opinion. He's a guard that can really light it up at times
(scoring-wise), but then has games where he is not a scoring factor at
all. In fact, most of his high-scoring games come when a lot of the
  other offensive options are failing.

He is a pretty decent ball-handler, but a bit sporadic at times. He
can frustrate people on defense, but the height disadvantage will kill
him in the NBA. He could be a late second-round prospect, if their is
a high demand for point guards.
