Poop:

A consensus All-American during his senior year, Respert challenged
for the Big Ten's all-time record for points in a career. And if you
have seen him shoot, you know why. Respert is the latest in a line of
very good guards produced by Jud Heathcoate at Michigan State. Were
it not for his size, there would be no question of Respert's ability
to have an immediate impact in the NBA.

Offensively, Respert's primary strength is his shooting skill. He can
hit a shot from just about anywhere -- including far beyond the three-
point stripe. Shawn is not of those one-dimensional shooters, though,
and moves constantly while on the offensive half of the court, trying
to rub off his defender or gain the split second he needs to launch a
shot. He is agood ballhandler and an above average passer who didn't
always get to show off these skills due to his role as the primary
(sometimes, only) scorer for MSU. Shawn is not especially quick,
owing to a serious knee injury suffered during his last year in high
school, and at 6'-3" can be blanketed by taller defenders.

No one says much about Respert's defense, but he is an above average
defender who double-teams well. He compensated for his size against
bigger off-guards by teaming with Eric Snow to play the trapping
defense Heathcoate is known for as well as any tandem MSU has ever
had. Respert's speed is a minus, but he compensates with great
conditioning that allows him to be always on the move.

What are Respert's chances in the NBA? At 6'-3", he may will have a
lot of trouble playing the 2 spot to which he is accustomed,
especially on the defensive side of the ball. His all-around skills
make him a likely candidate for conversion to point guard. He can
dribble, drive, defend quicker men if surrounded with sufficient
defensive support. His shot will not suffer from the rugged nature of
the NBA game. His relative lack of speed will hurt him at the point,
but he should be able to overcome many of the challenges he will face
against all but the quickest opponents. Even though though I am a big
Respert fan, I'm a bit leery to make him a lottery pick, though a good
team looking for a big potential payoff might be willing to gamble on
  him.

Scout: Eugene Wallingford

More Poop:

A problem for Respert is that he was measured at 6' 1.5" not 6-3. He
has never played PG at any level and 6'1" shooting guards are rare. He
still has a lot of skills and should be a lottery pick but this will hurt
  him some.

Poop:

Bob Sura came out of high school as an unheralded recruit and ended up being
ACC rookie of the year his freshman year, All-ACC first team his Junior
year and Florida States all time leading scorer. Actually, Sura was a
overall better player his senior year although his stats were way down and
he did not make All-ACC. He really cut down on his bone-head passes and
became a leader. The drop in stats probably had more to do with him trying
to carry a weak FSU team.

Offensively, Sura is considered a good shooter but really he is more of
a scorer (his three point shooting is in the low 30's). Sura is excellent
on the break as a finisher and was much improved at leading it this year.
He still has a tendency to try to make to fancy of a pass that leads to
some ugly turnovers. He did rack up a lot of assists, but again way to
many turnovers. In the NBA he should be stuck in the 2 spot where he won't
have as many ball handling chores.

Defensively, Sura has never been a standout. He does not really work hard
at it and tends to get lost from his man while tring to anticipate a
potential steal. There is also a concern about his attitude and willings
to work on D. However, Sura is an excellent rebounder for a 6-4 player.

Sura figures to be a mid-first round draft pick who could put up big
numbers. If he is willing to work on his defense and decision making,
Sura could be a big time player.

Scout: Craig Simpson

More Poop:

Sura is FSU's all time leading scorer. He also is highly productive in
assists, but has been well known for making some really dumb passes.
He is a scorer, no doubt, and that is the mentality he takes into
every game. He is not affraid to play inside, and is a very good
rebounder. His speed and quickness make him a dangerous defender, and
a penetrator on offense. His shooting is streaky at best, but when
he's ON, he's unstoppable. His size allows him to defend larger and
smaller players. Fre thow shooting isnt so good. Did not develope as
far as he could have as a college payer, do to poor coaching at FSU,
but should (especially with looser reffing in the NBA) be able to
really sparkle at the next level. He is very close to becoming a
"complete" playere. He can score, defend, rebund, pass, etc... All he
needs is a good work ethic and the discipline a good coach can give.
Sura will be a steal for ANY team that picks him.

Poop:

Personally, I always felt his strength was his speed at moving to the
basket, combined with his leaping ability. He's a streak shooter, but
over the past few years, it seems they had him shooting from outside more,
and moving to the basket less, which I felt was wasting his strengths.

He's a pretty good rebounder. He has very quick hands, and was excellent
at stealing the ball and deflecting passes. He's not a bad defensive
player, either. The comparisons with Scottie Pippen are pretty accurate, I
think, at least on a potential basis.

He used to be very skinny, but added quite a bit of weight, and
strength, throughout his college career. He is the first player I've
seen who seemed to get a bit worse from his sophomore to junior to
senior years, so his stock certainly has fallen a bit.

Poop:

Moten became the Big East (and Syracuse's) all time leading scorer this
year. He combines mental toughness with athletic ability and became a
big time college scorer. He responded to moving from shooting from small
forward to shooting guard by having his best year (junior).

Offensively, Moten is a great finisher who has become a three point threat.
He has good size for an NBA shooting guard and, although not extremely
athletic, is athletic enough. Moten took more outside shots this year
which explains why his overall percentage went down, however he became
a better three point threat. He also was a good clutch shooter hitting
several end of game shots. Moten needs to improve his ballhandling and
passing to become an NBA caliber guard.

Moten needs a lot of work defensively. Not particularly strong, this will
  hurt him in the pros.

Moten will be a mid to late first round pick. He will need much work to
hard to become an NBA starter. He *must* improve his defense and
ballhandling but is a hard worker and under the right coach, he should do
well. Moten had a very good Desert Classic averaging 19.5 points and
  making the MVP list

Kleinschmidt is a big time scorer. He can score both inside and out.
He has worked hard to become a better ballhandler (and needs to work
harder still on that). This is important to him because he played
small forward in college but will have to make the move to shooting
guard in the NBA. He has the skills to do this. His weakness's are
a lack of quickness and defensive ability. Quick NBA guards will kill
him at present. Kleinschmidt helped himself in the Desert Classic
averaging 8 points a game. He won the Desert Classic three point
contest with more then double the score of the second place finisher.
Kleinschmidt might have moved in to the first round but will more then
likely be a second round pick.

Poop:

Donald will always be considered a hero to UNC fans. His clutch shooting
in the 1993 NCAA tournament earned him the MVP and the reputation of being
a clutch player. In his junior year, Donald got off to one of the best
years ever by a UNC player (averaging over 23 points a game and about 55%
shooting). This was clearly his best stretch as a player. Then the
injuries came and Donald was never the same. This year Donald was, for
the most part, injury free however the makeup of the team was different
and Donalds role changed considerably. With the slower more inside oriented
UNC teams of Montross and Salvadori, Williams was expected to be the main
scorer (being the only player who could create his own shot). This year
Williams became the 3rd option behind Stackhouse and Wallace and it had
an effect on him, particularly early in the year when he really forced
his shot. He got more comfortable as the year went on and his stats were
much improved in the ACC (44.2% and 42.1).

Offensively Donald has become a very good all around player. Now able
to go to his left (something he could not do his 1st three years), he
regularly beat opponents off the dribble with good ballhandling skills
and a very quick dribble. He has a good pullup and has a very quick
release. He is a good enough ball handler that he should be able to
play some point. He really does need to work on his consistency, Donald
can put up some horrid shooting games.

Defensively, Donald is *much* improved over his sophomore year. This
year he was considered the best defensive guard on the team and usally
guarded the better scorer of the other team. This is the one area that
Donald improved on over his 4 years. The question mark is going to be
his size. At 6'3" he might have trouble with the bigger shooting guards
in the league. He should watch a lot of tape of Joe Dumars to see a
similar build play great D in the NBA. Hersey Hawkins is another good
  role model for Donald.

There was an article in the Raleigh News and Observer about Donald in the
NBA draft. They quoted a scout as saying that had Donald left after his
sophomore year he would have been a top 10 pick, now he might only be a
second rounder. This to me is silly. Take away the 6 game stretch in the
NCAA (1993) and Donald is more inconsistent then he was that year.
Overall Williams is a so much better overall player now that it is not
even close when compared to his sophomore year. I expect Donald to be
  a late first rounder.

Poop:

What a difference a year makes. After hitting the winning shot to
propel Arkansas to the NCAA championship, Thurman was considered a
sure lottery pick. This year scouts are questioning his quickness,
his ability to create his own shot and just what position he will
play in the NBA (SF or SG). Thruman is a three time All-SEC.

Offensively, Thurman is primarily a three point shooter with almost
half of his shot attempts being threes. This has led some scouts to
question his offensive skills. Shooting stand still threes in college
does not translate well to the pros. Thurman did not show much in the
the way of breaking down the defender and penetrating a defense.

Thurman, like most Arkansas players, is a very aggressive defensive
player. He overplays and tries to go for a lot of steals. He could
have problems in the NBA trying to guard bigger small forwards or
  quicker shooting guards.

As I said before, last year Thurman would have been a lottery pick.
This year, well he will still be a first rounder but probably not
as high as he thought he would have gone. I think mid to late
first round is a good place for him.

Scout: Craig Simpson

More Poop:

Thurman will always be remembered as the guy who hit "the shot"
that sank Duke in the 1994 NCAA tournament. It was just one
of the many clutch shots that Thurman hit throughout his career
at Arkansas. Thurman is a tremendous shooter, certainly one that
can hit the NBA 3 with ease -- and beyond. He is a very smooth
player and is able to create his own shot. A concern with
Thurman is that he does suffer from being a "tweener" -- i.e.
perhaps too small for a SF, and not quick enough to be a SG.
He may not be quick enough to guard some of the faster SGs in the
NBA. But at 6-7, he does have good size for the SG spot. Thurman
might just be at this point a poor man's Reggie Miller -- he even
has the trash talking down -- and he may even match Reggie's range.
Thurman could be as high as a mid 1st round pick, but likely is
a late 1st rounder or 2nd round pick.

Poop:

Brent Barry is definitely one of the big question marks entering this
year's draft. One of the four sons of former NBA great Rick Barry,
many people feel that Brent has definite NBA potential. Yet, many
people don't know who he is. Barry has never been to a single
postseason game in college--not the NCAA's, and not the NIT. Instead,
he has toiled for Oregon State in relative obscurity.

What is known about Barry is this: Brent's primary strengths are his
outstanding defense, his exceptional passing and court vision, and his
great athleticism. Barry's long arms make him an excellent thief and
shot- blocker (one year he was one of the PAC-10 leaders in blocked
shots; amazing coming from a 6'6" forward). His passes are nothing
short of brilliant, sometimes too much so--he often surprises
teammates with passes out of nowhere, which end up sailing out of
bounds, past the surprised recipient. His dunks are highlight film
material--Barry is proof that the title of a recent Wesley
Snipes/Woody Harrelson movie is incorrect. :) In addition to these
qualities, Barry is an excellent floor leader, and a "good citizen",
both on and off the court.

The weakest part of Barry's game has long been his jumpshot; however,
he has made tremendous strides in this regard in his senior year.
Barry has always been an excellent foul shooter--early in his career,
he shot free throws underhanded, like his father; recently he has
switched to a more conventional style. In addition, Barry played
small forward in college--due to his size, he will likely switch to
the backcourt in the NBA--how this change will affect him is unknown.

Unfortunately, though, Barry spent his entire career playing for a
mediocre team and a mediocre coach. Some will question whether he can
maintain his numbers when he is no longer the "big fish in a small
pond." He did face quality opposition in the Pac-10; however, the
Beavers usually lost to same. Others will question whether his skinny
frame will hold up to the constant bumping and banging that he will
face in the NBA. For this reason, his chances of being selected are
very much dependent on his performance in pre-draft camps.

Overall, I think that Barry can succeed in the NBA. (But then, what
do I know?) I see him playing a game very much similar to Penny
Hardaway or Scottie Pippen (I'm not saying he will be anywhere near as
GOOD, but his game will be similar), as all three are excellent
defenders, passers, and athletes. If his jumpshot continues to
blossom, I think Barry will end up being a quite solid pro. He has
the talent. He has the ethic. He only needs a chance to prove
  himself.

I think Barry will likely be drafted somewhere between the mid-first
round and the mid-second round. Depends very much, as I said above,
on his performance in the camps.

More Poop:

Barry is the real deal. Unlike his other brothers, he will one
day be a starter in the pros. The question is where he will play.
With hand checking not allowed, he can definately be a point guard.

My favorite player of all time is Magic so you have to believe me
when I say that Barry is the second best passer in modern day
basketball. With tremendous vision, height, and long arms, Barry can
create anything. With a set shot, Barry can shoot the three. Even
more important, the NBA was made for him. He can run the break by
filling the lanes or leading it himself. If he is fouled, he can make
  the shot.

Defense if the question mark. Although he can block shots and
steal passes, it's not clear how he will do against smaller, quicker
guards. He'll probably match up against 2's.

Looking down the draft order, I see many clubs that need a point
guard. Although, he's considered a two, I can see several teams jump
on him. He should be in the top 15. Scott Haskins (OSU) was taken
high by the Pacers as a 7 ft. novelty so I don't see anyone shying
away from Barry. He will bring fans to the games.

Poop:

Rencher is a big time scorer! He has very good quickness and is able
to break down defenses on his own. Rencher's biggest problems is that
he is just as apt to shoot you out of a game as well as shoot you in
a game. For a shooter of his caliber, 29% from three point land is
not very good. He is also not a very good free throw shooter.

Rencher will probably have some trouble guarding NBA shooting guards at
6-3 (really more like 6-1) although he was a good defender at Texas. He
is also a very good rebounder for his size and gets a lot of steals.

Rencher was a starter for the Central team at the Desert Classic and
averaged 7.5 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assits a game. Rencher will
probably be a second rounder and could become a good 6th man providing
instant offense coming off the bench.

Rutherford became the main outside threat durning OSU's run to the Final

UCLA was able to expose his inability to create his own shot. He has worked

Poop:

Jimmy came out of high school with high expectations, but found himself
as one of the lower options on the fabled "Fab Five" squad. In his
senior year, with a chance to finally shine, he did not respond as well
as many had anticipated. Still, he was a leader on the team, and, with
fellow senoir Ray Jackson, usually scored the most and had the most
assists. He showed amazing ability in his last game as a Wolverine,
scoring 23, picking up 17 rebounds and dishing out 8 assists. Many UM
fans wonder where all of that offense had been all season.

Offensively, Jimmy struggled with his outside shot. He also had
difficulty driving through the defense to get a lay-up. He showed that
he could drive, but was not consistent. He averaged slightly less than 3
assists, and does a good job of distributing the ball. He is still a
scorer, and was in double figures in all but 2 games this season. It
should be remembered also that he was more comfortable in past years
when Michigan ran more. This year was more a half-court offense, and
Jimmy definitely excels in the open court. He is a clutch shooter,
tipping in the winning basket at the buzzer against UNC
in the 1992 Rainbow Classic, and hitting a memorable three at the buzzer
to give Michigan a come from behind win against Iowa last year. He is a
spectacular dunker, and a great finisher, and can run with anyone. All
in all, offensively he looked more comfortable as a third option. To
make it in the NBA he will have to find his outside shot, which eluded
  him all season long.

There is nothing to complain about defensively. He has been Michigan's
best defensive player his entire career, and is second in steals in
Michigan history. He shadows a man always, and is never caught in the
wrong position. He can be counted on to shut down the oppositions
  shooting guard.

To be a good NBA player, King will have to find a reliable shot. He has
nothing to worry about defensively, he is quick and smart and can stick
to anyone. Everyone has always known he has great running, leaping and
dunking ability, but is it possible he still hasn't bloomed into the
superstar he was expected to be? He could be a late bloomer who never
had the chance to showcase his stuff, or he may never find his game.

More Poop:

King did not have a good Portsmouth camp and was not invited to the
Desert Classic. This will hurt him in the draft.

Poop:

Boyce came to Colorado from a high school team in Illinois that won
consecutive state titles, and included Sherrell Ford (Illinois-Chicago)
and Michael Finley (Wisconsin). His arrival at Colorado was heralded as
the beginning of a turn-around for CU men's basketball. Unfortunately,
he was never surrounded with much of a supporting cast.

In his four years at Colorado, Boyce was the team leader in scoring,
field goal and free throw attempts, minutes played, and assists.
His natural offensive position is at shooting guard; however Boyce
often played at the point guard spot, because Colorado had no
legitimate point guard, and Colorado needed the ball in Boyce's hands
  to have a winning chance.

Boyce has 3pt shooting range, as well as outstanding ability to beat
a defender one-on-one. His mediocre shooting percentage is much more
a reflection on his attempting to carry the team rather than his
true shooting ability. He handles the ball very well, and is a solid
if unspectacular passer. His high turnover rate is indicative of his
  "take over the team" role.

Boyce rebounds well from the guard spot, and is an excellent leaper. He
is a good defensive player, often guarding the opponent's top scorer.

As a player in the pro ranks, Boyce will need to improve his field goal
shooting, something which should come with not having to carry a team.
Defensively, he'll in general be fine guarding bigger guards, but will
need to work on handling smaller, quicker point guards. Overall, Boyce
will be a solid backcourt addition to a team that selects him. The
best sort of team for him would be one where he can gain reasonable
playing time and experience with a veteran, established backcourt.

Other factors: Boyce broke his right (?) leg in his last game, a Big 8
tournament game. He had struggled with minor shoulder and ankle
injuries as a senior, and was just five points from becoming the first
player in Colorado history to score 2,000 career points when he broke
the leg. He had surgery to repair the break and is reported to be
  healing well.

Boyce is Colorado's all-time leading scorer, and was a member of the
Big 8 All Conference 1st or 2nd teams in his career.

Poop:

McMahon became Vanderbilts main offensive player with the graduation of
Billy McCaffrey. This did hurt some of his numbers (all of his shooting
percentages were way down this year), but he was able to increase his
points per game. McMahan was also Vanderbilts best defensive player.
It is unlikely that McMahan will be drafted.

Poop:

Kim is one of the most hard-working and courageous players ever to
grace a basketball court. After a truly impressive freshman
performance in which he played shooting guard on Tulane's fabled
"posse" (a group of five players that were substituted in as a group)
and was 2nd on the team in scoring, his leg (tibia) was badly broken
(lengthwise) in the preseason NIT against Indiana. He was declared a
medical redshirt for the remainder of his sophomore year and doctors
were not certain he would ever again walk without a limp, let alone
play basketball. But through pure will and character, Lewis did come
back to play three more years. While he never managed to regain his
pre-injury form or reach his full potential (otherwise you wouldn't
need me to tell you about him...), Kim has been a major contributor on
both defense and offense for the past two seasons. The degree of
maturity and character which he developed through his injury and
recovery have made Kim an impressive leader on and off the court.

Kim's offensive skills have not fully recovered from his freshman
season. He's lost a good inch or two off of his vertical leap, and
this really shows up on his jumpshot. Nonetheless, Lewis is a good
perimeter player with very good shot selection and ball handling
skills. Unfortunately, his full-court speed is lacking and he retains
some hesitancy on offense, particularly on fast breaks (which is how
he broke his leg). His ability to shoot threes remains, but he is not
really a standout in this category.

Defense is Kim's forte. Tulane coach Perry Clark places great
emphasis on defense, and Kim is one of his proteges. Lewis became
Tulane's all-time steal leader this year. His lack of real speed
hasn't interfered with his quickness, and he has an uncanny ability to
anticipate passes. He is an extremely inttelligent player and can
often outguess opponents. His only defensive weakness is against the
fast break, where once again his speed is something of a
hindrance. All the same, Kim can play half court defense with
anyone. Unfortunately the quicker pace and open style of the NBA may
  create problems.

Kim's NBA prospects are marginal at best. He has the potential to
play backup somewhere as a defensive specialist and may yet recover
his offensive abilities. His perimeter skills can back up his
defense. His maturity and intelligence give him some promise as a deep
reserve. But his inconsistent offense, lack of speed, and hesitancy,
all the after effects of what should have been a career ending injury,
tend to dictate against an NBA career. It is distinctly unlikely, and
unfortunate, that Kim will be drafted, but if he does play in the pros
Kim may well pleasantly surprise some team a few years down the
road. This won't happen, however, unless Kim can finally shake off the
residual mental effects of his injury. He made great strides in this
direction his senior year, but some significant work remains to be
done. I'm not sure any NBA team is willing to help Lewis do this work
or exercise the patience that will be necessary.
