Iverson is a very special player. He is not a true point guard, more of an Isiah Thomas type who can score and also dish the ball. With experience, Iverson should get better as a PG. His strenghts are his quickness and overall athletic ability. He is an excellent defender and is adapt at getting steals (his 3.4 average was second in the nation). Georgetown used him in a full court pressing game meant to totally disrupt the opponents offense. More often then not, it was successful. Offensively, Iverson is great on the break and is an excellent penetrator. This is not to say that Iverson does not have any weaknesses. He does not have a very good shot (at least it is very inconsistent). One pro scout described him as Abdu-Raulf (of the Nuggets) *without* the jump shot. I take it that this means that the scout does not think that Iverson can be a complete NBA PG. I don't really agree with that comparison and believe that when he grows up some, Iverson will be an All-Star for years to come. Iverson should be picked in the top 5. |

General Info: First team All-American. Big East Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Comments: Extremely fast, quick guard. Tends to play out of control. Has the athletic ability and confidence to dominate a game. Summary: He'll probably be the first player selected. |

Marbury came to Georgia Tech as the most heralded recruit in the ACC and the most heralded Point Guard since Kenny Anderson. He did not disappoint. Marbury became the best player on a very, very good Georgia Tech team. Not only did he lead the team from the point but gave GT a defensive presence that they have not had since Bruce Dalyriple. His strengths are many, an excelent defender and ballhandler he can control his offense and disrupt the opponents offense. He is a good shooter but is a little streaky (ie inconsistent) and must get better. His range easily goes to three point range. He is a master at breaking down the defense with his dribble and should have no trouble penetrating in the NBA. He has great basketball instincts. All those wonderful strengths aside, Marbury does have some weaknesses: He did not have a good assist to turnover ratio, 161 to 115 (although he showed *much* improvement at the end of the year). He needs to bulk up some, this was apparent the way the physical backcourt of Cincinnati dominated him in the NCAA's. Overall, Marbury is a special player. Like so many he is coming out way to soon and could use an extra year or two to mature as a person. Given some time he will be a star in the NBA for years to come. He should be a top 5 pick. |

General Info: Reminds scouts of Kenny Anderson because he's followed a very similar path- New York City prep phenom, who attends Georgia Tech, and is an early entrant in the N.B.A. Draft. Comments: Flashy point guard, who could develop into one of the league's premier point guards. Summary: Expected to be a top 5 pick. |

Strengths: Great leaper, obvious nickname of Skywalker fits him, might be a hair over 6' but dunks with ease. Quick and fast and developed a decent outside shot while in school. Very good at getting his own shot. Also plays the passing lanes well, among the national leaders in steals while in college. Weaknesses: He's really a SG in a PG's body, is not a good ballhandler and only uses the dribble to get his own shot, USF tried to play him at the PG but he was not very effective there at all. Has to work on playing straight up defense instead of just gambling for steals, has to become better at doing all the little things and not just making show-stopping plays. Basically a great kid who's too small to play in the NBA unless his PG skills improve dramatically. Similar to Tony Delk of Kentucky but not as good of a shooter. Probably going to have to prove himself in the CBA for a couple of years. |
More POOP (Scout: Chia Pao) |
Walker is 6-0, 175, and his calling card is the dunk. He's got amazing hops and hangtime for a small guy, and he isn't afraid to take the ball up over the bigger trees when he drives the lane. Walker suffered from a broken leg last year, but recovered well to play this last year. He was the shortest player in the Reebok Dunk Contest televised on ESPN this year. He has all the tools to be a good defender, quick mitts, decent size and strength, and great quickness. It seems like he doesn't apply himself to one-on-one defending, but he plays the lanes as good as anyone, and this is reflected in his high steals totals. His good anticipation allows him to knock away any lazy passes. Offensively, he is able to burn virtually anyone with a Terrell Brandon like easy-quickness. He can hit the three, but probably needs to develop some consistency on it. I think his stats could have been a good deal higher, but Phil Matthews implemented a Cavaliers-type slowdown offense that held Walker back a little bit. Gerald is a great athlete who could have a spectacular future in the NBA if he works hard, and of course, if he is given the chance. |

Geary is not a true point guard. Geary *is* a great athlete and defender. He is not going to dazzle anyone but will play hard, dive for lose balls. Geary is not a good shooter but did show tremendous improvement on the offensive end durning his career. Geary had a great Nike Desert Classic leading the Midwest team with a 15.3 average. |

Reggie Geary-transition to PG this year probably made him a first round pick. The best defender to come out of college in ten years. If he can't put up the offense he still stick cuz of his offense. Showed decent range the last two years and showed very underrrated passing and distribution skills. Great size for a PG, 6'4", can and will give the taller PG's in the league all they can handle with him in their face. Will need a few more years to truly learn the PG role though. |

POOP(Scout: Craig Simpson) |
Nash started off the year in a big way leading Santa Clara to a huge upset of defending national champs UCLA. He is a great ballhandler and showed surprising quickness at the Desert Classic pre-draft camp. He is a very good shooter whose stats went down for his senior year. This is due to having to force so much playing on a relatively weak team. Nash really, really helped himself at the Desert Classic and will be the 3rd or 4th point guard chosen (depending on who all comes out). |
More POOP(Scout: Phil Bedard ) |
One of the greatest players ever to emerge from the ranks of Candian high school ranks, Nash has been the starting PG for the Candian National Senior team the past two years. Nash, a gifted athlete who emigrated to Victoria, B.C. as a youngster from South Africa, also starred as a soccer player on the B.C. provincial team as a youth. His brother Martin is a star striker on the Canadian National U-23 soccer team. He first gained national recognition as a freshman at Santa Clara, the only Division I school to recruit him, when his clutch free throws at the end of regulation helped knock of #2 seed Arizona in the NCAA tournament. Nash is a natural point guard who can distribute the ball effectively and hit the long-range jumper. He uses deceptive quickness and a superior understanding of the game to his advantage. Like all of the great point guards, Nash has uncanny court vision and a sixth sense for the game. He may be the best *true* point guard in the draft. Steve's biggest weakness is his man-to-man defense. His average foot speed makes him an easy target for small, quick point guards to blow by. His lack of physical strength does not bode well for handling the bigger, stronger point guards in the NBA in the post. |
More POOP(Scout: Russ Smith) |
Strengths: Nash is the epitome of a gym rat, good shooter, can dribble the ball and is an excellent passer. Smart and very competitive, knows his limitations and uses what he has. Improved every year at Santa Clara. Weaknesses: Not slow but not quick, improving but still a poor defender, had trouble getting his own shot against quality opponents. Played in Canada and thus is still adjusting to the level of play in the US. Sometimes Nash forgets what's a good shot and what's not. Comments: Another kid you have to like, late first rounder who could move up, the comparisons to Stockton are skin deep, nowhere near as quick. Has to improve his defense, played a lot of zone in college which could hurt him in the NBA. |
MORE POOP(Scout: Owen P O'Malley) |
General Info: A native of Canada. Comments: Good shooter, good ballhandler, and a good passer. Summary: His solid showing at the Nike Desert Classic, solidified his status as a top 20 pick. |

POOP(Scout: Craig Simpson) |
Sheffer is a tall point guard. I hate to list this as strength but it is a nice thing to have in a point guard (especially in the NBA's Eastern conference). He has a nice shooting touch to go along with great ballhandling skills. He is an older player (24 years old) because of serving three years in the israeli army. This might be a plus. With rookies being able to bolt after only three years, a more mature rookie might be able to help more now instead of waiting for him to grow up. During his junior year, Sheffer experienced a shooting slump which made him reluctant to shoot. This year he was much more aggressive, shooting 130 more threes (and making 95). He did play in the Desert Classic and should be drafted in the late first round or early in the second. |
MORE POOP(Scout: Mike Porat) |
His main strengths are his shooting ability, his ball control, but most of all his court vision. Sheffer is a smart player, who can handle the responsibility that comes with the point guard position. He take the shots when the shotclock winds down and usually makes them. He is a player you can count on, and is very useful and responsible at running the offense.. His main weakness is his lack of speed. This could cause trouble at guarding fast small point guards. Sheffer is big, and can guard up to small forwards, and thus makes up for this weakness... He needs to be given help in 1 on 1 defense, but is a solid late first rounder... Look for him to go to the knicks in the seconds first round pick... |
More POOP(Scout: Eiro Monitz ) |
I dont have to tell you how good a ballplayer he is, but his intangibles are one of his biggest strengths. While 21 years old, he led his team in israel (hapoel galil-elion) to the national championship, and by that breaking an increadible streak of 23 consecutive championships, held by maccabi tel aviv (maccabi has also won the last three years, since sheffer left). He served in the israeli army, is the starting point guard of the israeli national team, and has a lot of international experience. he has played with and against some former and future nba players. he is a very tough minded and determined person, and i say that also by knowing his brother and few of his friends. by going away to play in college he gave up a lot of money (about 1 million dollars) he would have earned, had he stay in europe, since being the best player in israel. |

POOP(Scout: Craig Simpson) |
Drew came to Georgia Tech very much unheralded. After a redshirt first year, Barry earned a spot in Techs starting lineup and immediately impressed everyone with his basketball instincts and passing skills. Barry was a four year starter and lead the ACC in assists for 3 straight years. Barry's strengths are of course his passing skills. The no look pass is forte and is able to thread the needle on the break or when penetrating the defense. He is a good, but very streaky shooter. Barry was listed as the shooting guard but he actually played a lot of point with the point guard (Best and Marburry) moved to scoring guard. The weaknesses are his strength (he will need to get stronger in the pros) and his defense. His shooting can be way to streaky and he needs to become more consistent (a 36% 3p% and 40% overall is to low). Barry was overlooked at times thoughout his career and usally made teams pay for the oversight. Barry will probably be a lower first round pick (this may change depending on how he does in camps), and has a chance to be a solid NBA player. |

Chris Collins came to Duke as a heralded high school ALL-American...He helped to contribute to Duke's National Championship bids his freshman and sophomore years. However, he was only able to start 3 games during his junior year due to an ankle injury. His senior year was a major turnaround. He helped provide Duke's offense with a longe range threat as well as provided his team with a fiery and emotional leader. His greatest strengths have proven to be his 3 point shooting ability/jump shot, and the great energy and excitement he brings to his team. However, Chris is only a one dimensional player. He has difficulty dribbling out of traps and lacks a quick first step. Often times he relies too heavily on himself and does not make rational decisions such as forcing jump shots. (as demonstrated by the end of the Duke/Michigan game) Since he is currently recuperating from surgery on his right ankle that he re-injured during the home finale against UNC, Chris did not have a chance to showcase his talents at either of the pre-draft camps. What role can Chris Collins hope to play in the NBA? Perhaps he can hook on with an NBA team (Pistons??) performing in a role similar to what Steve Kerr does for the Chicago Bulls mainly as their 3 point specialist. Defensively: Chris will have a difficult time matching up man-to-man against NBA Point Guards. Againts the quicker guards such as Georgia Tech's Marbury, Collins seemed a good step slower and against the taller Jeff Mcginnis of UNC, Chris could not contest his shot. Chris plays with heart and determination, but His limited athletic ability will make it difficult for him to make an impact defensively. |

Frank Seckar came to Vanderbilt a relatively unheralded player out of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and quickly became a fan favorite, a reliable bench scorer, and by his junior year, the Commodore's team leader. Playing behind Billy McCaffrey his freshman and sophomore years, he concentrated primarily on providing the team a dependable ball handler and tough perimeter defender--two skills McCaffrey lacked--and those skills should earn him a look from NBA teams in need of backup point guards. Seckar is an outstanding outside shooter who exhibited NBA range early in his career. He had several games in which he was almost perfect from behind the three-point line. He's also quick, sees the floor well, and plays tough one-on-one perimeter defense. Size is his principal liability. |

Z, as he is often referred to, is a true point guard whose biggest asset is his tenacity and drive. He stepped into the starting position in this past year after Michael Lloyd's sudden departure and silenced his critics with solid game after another. He is a great passer who does not really like to shoot, but he can hit the three when needed, shooting a 37% clip from the arc. As said before, his tenacity is his biggest asset, as he played most of the Big East tournament with a badly sprained knee. |

LeVeldro does two things very well: (1) he plays nonstop, brutal, stifiling defense, and (2) given room on the perimiter, he will drive the paint until the defense closes, then pull WAAAY up and stick the nice J. It's pretty safe to say that he does both of these things at the NBA level. So why is he a probable second-rounder/free agent? Because there are holes in his game. At the point, he's effective and reliable but not a dazzling playmaker. At the two, he's not aggresive enough looking to score. A classic "combo guard," though his ballhandling is solid which is a plus. What can he do for an NBA team? Probably provide a lot of solid backup minutes at the point for a team that doesn't rely too heavily on playmaking from the one spot. Because he's such a terrific defender, he can hold his own with just about anyone. Unless his disposition changes remarkably, he'll probably never be a 20 ppg scorer, but he can give you 7-10 ppg and hold the opposing point to about that too. Simmons is probably not a "hidden superstar," but he is a pretty much no-risk solid backup at the point. Whether he's drafted likely depends on the philosophy of the teams picking in the mid-to-late second round. If everyone's trying to be Jerry West, then LeVeldro will probably have to go the FA route. If someone is satisfied with picking up a backup player with a late second round pick, he'll be an attractive choice. |

Strengths: Has an uncanny ability to sense the game, knows where everybody is and delivers an accurate catchable pass every time. Can shoot, create his own shot and makes his teammates better. Excellent anticipator on defense, has good size and strength. Weaknesses: Who knows if he'll ever get back from the knee problems? Right now he's lost a couple of steps and has problems covering the lost athletic ability. Played very little in college with the injuries. Comments: Great upside if he can overcome the injuries, but an ACL, a cracked kneecap and a torn patellar tendon have really set him back. Gamble but on talent alone he's the best player in the draft. Has the ability to get Roy Navaree and I to actually agree on something! |

POOP(Scout: Thad Williamson) |
Jeff McInnis established himself as a top-flight and at times dominant point guard in the ACC during the 1995 and 1996 seasons, yet lingering questions regarding his attitude, the circumstances of his early departure from North Carolina, and overall talent level make him a major x-factor in the 96 draft. McInnis's strength is in his overall ballhandling abilities and decision-making at the point; in both 1995 and 1996 he led starting ACC point guards in assist-turnover ratio. At 6-4, 190 pounds, and a substantial amount of muscle, McInnis was able to easily penetrate into the paint at the college level, but while his size will still be slightly above average for an NBA point guard, what was a major advantage in college should be all but neutralized at the next level. McInnis is a good shooter with streaky tendencies and a good sense of when to go for the jugular, having hit numerous clutch jumpers in the late moments of games at UNC; but at times in 1996 McInnis also clearly forced his own shot to his team's detriment. He should have no problem adjusting to NBA 3 point line, but needs to make his foul shooting more reliable. Defensively, McInnis is a fine on the ball defender--one of his career highlights is a game saving strip of Cavaliers guard Bob Sura in a two point victory over Florida State in 1995--but was not considered particularly strong on help in Carolina's team defense, in guarding his man away from the ball, or in generating steals. Moreover, with average speed and quickness, there is serious doubt as to whether McInnis will be able to keep up with the Paytons and Packs, and this may well be the most important reason it is difficult to project McInnis as being more than a lifer backup--albeit perhaps a very good one--in the NBA. McInnis is an excellent rebounder for a point guard. Psychologically, McInnis at his best is a driven competitor with a great deal of self-confidence and sizable helping of swagger on the court, well-respected by his teammates, and capable of dominant performances as in the UNC games this at Duke and against New Orleans in the NCAA tournament. On the other hand, in 1996 McInnis also showed that he does not yet handle losing and frustration very well, as he pushed his habitual complaints about officiating over the edge more than once for costly technicals. For this reason, a rebuilding NBA team on the way up would likely be wise to pass on McInnis--it's hard to imagine the Charlotte native prospering in a losing situation. On the other hand, a top-flight team in need of reserve help at the point (Seattle and Orlando come to mind, and McInnis could certainly give a Howard Eisley of Utah a run for his job) might do well to take a young, emotional player with a lot of heart and a lot to learn. |

General Info: Probably the best point guard at North Carolina since Kenny Smith. Comments: Good defender, who has good size for a point guard. Summary: Projects to a late-first round pick. Would be an excellent pick for Chicago at #29. |
