Another high school player with tremendous physical ability but not
much of a clue about how to really play the game of basketball.

McGrady likes to compare himself to Penny Hardaway. I can see that a
little bit, but Penny played PG as he grew up -- it's not clear that
McGrady played organized basketball.

McGrady is an amazingly gifted athlete. He moves gracefully, has very
good quickness, and jumps very well. He has a smooth shot that appears
fundamentally sound. He is athletic around the hoop, able to contort his
body to get looks at the basket in heavy traffic.

Offensively, he has great potential with his shooting. He could be a
tremendous offensive rebounder. However, he doesn't move without the ball.
Period. Perhaps that's a fault of his high school coaching. It's a big
weakness in his game.

Defensively, he again has great potential. He does a decent job on defense
when he tries, but nothing exceptional, except shot blocking. McGrady
has a lot of work to do on the defensive end of the court. He doesn't
box out very much, either.

Ballhandling is above averae for a high school senior his size. Nothing
remarkable, though.

McGrady is certainly an intriguing player for a NBA team to draft. He
has great potential, but has really only had one year of great play in
high school to base a decision on. He could become a great 2 or 3 in
the league. Most any team would have to wait a minimum of a year, perhaps
two, before getting any feedback.

In comparing him to the other recent high school seniors who've made the
NBA, McGrady compares most closely to Jermaine O'Neal. Physically, he
probably approaches Garnett, but he doesn't have Garnett's size or feel
for the game.

This kid has great potiential in playing the 2-3 postions his play at the
magic's all-stars was borderline. His stats of his junior year in a weak
divioson of flordia basketball were he played were 22.3 PPG, 15.0 RPG,
and 9.0 BPG indicates pretty strong game . But like I said he played in a
weak comference. During the summer he went to various h.s. camps at the
addias basketball camp he was a virtual unknown. His national rank was
#175 and moving up he tore up the league out playing some of the best at
his postion like lamar odom. He earned MVP at the camp he then transfered
to a private school MOUNT ZION CHRISTIAN and dominated the higher level
of competion by averaging 22.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 4.5 APG, 2.7 SPG, 2.1 BPG
while leading his team to a 26-2 record. MCGRADY WANTS TO EXCEED
More Poop (Scout: Shivaram Shanmugam)
Tracy is an unbeliavable athlete. I saw him in a tournament back in Florida
and he was truly impressive. He threw down the most amazing dunks in real
game situations, not to mention his performance in the dunk contest. Was more
impressive athletiacally than former Floridians Vince Carter and Eddie Jones.
Has excellent ocurt presence and uncanny ball-handling ability for a man of
his size, not to mention nice touch on his jumper, but where he excels is in
the transition game where he runs like a gazelle and finshes spectacularly
with authority in traffic. But, for all his potential, he sill needs to under
stand the finer points of the game... fundamental man-to-man defense (in high
school he would just block everybody's shot with athletic ability but that
will not be the case in the NBA), offensive movement (without the ball he is a
stationary player and will need to move around if he wants to be a successfull
wing player in the NBA). But ovreall, if given time to mature, and if he is
allowed to play up-and-down open court basketball, Tracy McGrady can be a
star!!!

Poop (Scout: Philip Kasiecki)
Cory Carr got his chance as a starter this past season, after being
perhaps the best sixth man in the nation last season, and took full
advantage of it. Carr led Texas Tech in scoring this past season, and
he and teammate Tony Battie formed one of the best "dynamic duos" in
college basketball this past season.
Carr can flat out score, and in bunches. However, that is
precisely his problem- he tends to be streaky with his shooting, in part
because he has a tendency to take a lot of bad shots. He would have
games this past season where he scored more than 20 points, but had
about as many shots, or scored most of his points from the free throw
line. A lot of shots that Carr misses are bad shots. Some see Carr as
being more of a scorer than a shooter. Carr handles the ball decently.
Defensively, Carr is decent. He works hard. He will not shut down
the opposing shooting guard, but he won't usually allow him to run wild,
either.
Cory Carr should be a late first round pick, possibly going early
in the second round. He may also go higher, due to a dearth of
top-notch shooting guards in this draft. If he can get away from taking
bad shots, and continue to work on defense, he could be a steal at that
spot.

Poop (Scout:Kenneth Burton)
Derek Anderson was the best player at Kentucky this past season, and
that includes Ron Mercer. He has the quickness to guard the point and an
explosive first step to drive by defenders one on one. He also has good
shooting range and averaged arround 18 points a game. He's also an
excelent passer and team player. He will be the steal of the draft if he
is selected number 16 which is unlikely.
More Poop (Scout:franlamarco@ttlc.net)
derek has tremendous physical ability and can play two different positions
either shooting guard or small forward, He is a highly regarded player in
the eyes of all nba teams
More Poop (Scout:Philip Fink)
Derek Anderson, if it weren't for his injury history, would be a
definite lottery pick. He is easily the most complete off guard in this
year's draft. A good rebounder, very good passer for his position, and
standout defender who can shoot from the outside and take it to the
basket. The question mark is his durability, specifically his knees.
Given his promise I expect that some team will decide to take a chance
on him by the fifteenth pick.

REGGIE FREEMAN played at same high school that felipe lopez played at
they, were teammates. although lopez got all the pubilcity freeman still
had enough potienal to interest coach penders at texas. His field goal
percentage is pretty low for a shooting guard so a steady jump shot is a
must in order to make a living. But then again run and gun is texas's
offensive philosophy. He has improved his ball- handling which allows him
to use his athletic gifts to soar past defenders into the lane. His
3-point shooting is awfull yet he tries to hoist it with regularity.
Defense is not his fortey in that he becomes to focused on scoring. He
also shoots to many shoots that he can not make. Overall I think he will
get drafted in the first round because of the fact that there are not
many good or decent shooting guards in this draft.

NBA.com Profile
Poop (Scout:Gene Huh)
The thing that stands out the most about Shea Seals is that he is a
winner. Seals has played in the NCAA tournament during all four years
of his college career. This may not be a significant piece of
information to use when evaluating a player from UNC or Kansas, but
Seals accomplished this while playing for teams in the MVC and WAC, two
conferences that traditionally do not receive a lot of NCAA invitation
bids.

Although Seals is known as a shooter because of his 20 point
performance against Dream Team III in '96, he has not been a consistent
shooter during his college shooter. Seals has a decent-looking shot and
impressive range, but has displayed questionable shot selection and
accuracy during his career (primarily because Tulsa has depended on him
so much). He cannot create his own shot off the dribble and is
basically an erratic spot-up shooter who can catch fire on occasion and
uses his solid driving abiity far too infrequently. However, Seals'
passing skills and ballhandling skills are solid and he has shown the
ability to make his teammates better by making the right play at the
right time.

Although Seals is a rather average athlete with slightly above average
quickness, his primary strength is his defensive ability. Seals is the
type of defender that can put the clamps on an opponent's top perimeter
scoring threat. His long arms and very strong (and perhaps too
muscular) physique are put to good use in his role as a defensive
stopper.

Most experts project that Seals will be drafted late in the 1st round
because of his productive track record. However, unless he can improve
the accuracy of his jumpshot, Seals will be nothing more than a fourth
guard in the NBA.
More Poop (Scout:JCash34@aol.com)
Shea Seals was a pre-season all american after scoring 20 points on 6-3
pointers against the Dream Team in the early summer. His play during his
senior year at Tulsa was consistent, but not great. No one doubts his
scoring ability (21.3 ppg) however he is able to be stopped, it was proven in
the NCAA's when he had two woeful games scoring 15 in one and 7 in the other.
Scouts have high hopes for this 6-5, 210 lb. 2 guard who has incredible
potential to be a star if he becomes the same player he was aginst the NBA's
best.

In my report on Ed Gray, I thought although the guy has
some gifts (shooting being the main one) I didn't think that
he had any one on one moves, and needed to be run off picks
in order to score at all. I think the impression is that
Cotton is a simliar kind of player, but I didn't get that in
watching him play here at Poly. He didn't have a great game,
at least by what I may have been expecting, but he showed
both range, and an ability to drive into the lane. He's
light though. I think he runs <190 lbs, and at his listed height of 6'5" that may prove to be a bonus. Physically I think he's a gamer... but in the game that I saw him at here with us leading by two with 4 seconds to go, he looked for his shot, passed to their point guard (name escapes me) who took what was unfortunately the game winner. Now maybe this just shows that he's not selfish, and willing to look to teamates who have better looks, but if Cotton's the goto guy, why didn't he take the shot? From my recollection, the play went to him, but the defense wasn't *that* tight, although the guy who took the shot was definitely wide open. If I saw him play a few more times and seen him take the last second hero shot, then I'd feel this guy would be a good pickup. At this point, I'd probably rate him behind Gray for the fact that I've seen Gray more, but Cotton could be a real sleeper... but is likely to fall to the second round. He may even fall out of the draft completely and simply be a safe rookie free agent. Teams like Boston might snag this guy in the second round, in the hopes that he'll come hungry for the ball.

ANTHONY PARKER'S draft rank took a plummet this season he was to be the
first shooting guard taken but now apprears more to be a lock for the
late first round or a second round draft pick. His senior numberes were
not impressive as his junior stats . ball handleing has never been
parker's strongest asset. He needs a true point guard by his side to feed
him be 1000 % effective. parker is not a pure long range shooter. PARKER
has been seen as the school 's best player since hersey hawkins. His
defense has improved each year. He likes to set the tone with his
willingness to go up against the opposing guards. overall his senior
season had career low'S in every catorgory from rebouding, scoring, field
goal percentage and free throw pecentage. I don't see him as a star but a
competent pro maybe. His cofidence in his game must come back to him in
order for him to succed at the next level

Tennessee-Chattanooga had one of it's best seasons ever due in large part to
Johnny Taylor. This 6-8 athletic small forward took them to the sweet
sixteen where they were beaten by Providence. Taylor was the conference's
player of the year after averaging 16.5 ppg and 7.3 rpg. He has a lot of
potential, but it is necessary that he develop an outside shot, most of his
scoring came within 10 feet of the basket, and improve his foul shooting, he
went 5 for 14 against Providence in the NCAA's. Taylor would be a good
pickup for any team in the second round, but don't look for him to be an NBA
all star.

This native Texan is a fabulous passing forward and the fourteenth player to
be selected to the McDonald's All American Team from Oak Hill
Academy. "He will surprise people with how versatile his game is and he's
as versatile as any player I've ever coached at Oak Hill," says coach
Steve Smith. "Stephen likes to make an assist before he shoots himself and
he's fantastic in the open court." He led the team in scoring,
three-point field goals made, 951, and assists. Oak Hill finished 27-4 and
Jackson was one of five players on the team to average double figures
in scoring.
**

Stephen Jackson was considered by many to be a top-20 prep player
before he was declared ineligible to play at Arizona last year.
He was the leading scorer in the 1996 McDonald's All-American
game, on a team that included Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O'Neal and
Tim Thomas. His high school coach, Steve Smith from Oak Hill
Academy, considers him a blend of Jerry Stackhouse and Ron
Mercer and one of his most talented players ever.

Exactly how much impact Jackson has in the NBA is questionable.
His raw talent is first-rate, but whether he can develop the work
ethic and consistency necessary will determine his success.
A team might take a chance on him late in the first round,
and he'll probably turn into either a good NBA player or a waste
of a roster space for a couple of years.

Willoughby will be a solid NBA player, although not a starter, for one
reason and one reason alone. He can flat out shoot the ball. Shoots
the ball much better than the guys who will go ahead of him Carr,
Cotton, Seals and Parker, but is not in the same class athletically.
Has a quick release, great form and excellent touch with range well
beyond the college arc. Unfortunately, Dedric is not very quick, and
will have trouble defending NBA guards. He is also only 6'3" with no
point guard skills, so he will end up as a role player, coming off the
bench to shoot the three-ball. Reminds me a lot of Voshon Lenard as a
player, but is a better shooter than Voshon was at Minnesota.

Ike is a tremendous shooter with decent size and strength. Don't
discount his stats just because he played for one of the weaker
Pac-10 teams. Washington State did not run many screens for him, and he
showed the ability to create his own shot and hit some tough ones. Also,
his work ethic and humility are beyond reproach, while his ball-handling
is about adequate for a 2-guard. Unfortunately, his defensive skills are
not so good. His relatively slow footwork may confine him to bit roles at
the NBA level.

After getting very few minutes at Michigan during his freshman year, Olivier
Saint-Jean decided to transfer to a program where he would get more minutes.
In two seasons at San Jose State, Saint-Jean has become one of the nations
leading scorers (23.7 ppg), and taken his team to the NCAA tournament. The
France native blends an inside-outside game on his offensive attack and is a
very good rebounder for his size (8.8 rpg). His improved play over the last
two season has caused him to become a potential first round draft pick, but I
look for him to go in the early second round.

Alvin Williams has great size and good skills to be a point guard at the next
level. He is a quick and creative scorer, and has the skills of a point
guard, although he spent most of the season at shooting guard. Williams
came alive during the NCAA's which upped his stock, but some question his
ability to break down defenses and create plays. He's played in the shadow
of Kerry Kittles for the bulk of his career and Tim Thomas this past year so
he hasn't gotten much publicity. I look for him to be a second round draft
pick.

I like this guy. Despite being listed here as an off guard he will be a
point guard in the pros, just as he was in college. For a point he has
excellent size and rebounding ability. He has also proven himself of
running a team and making the basic, if not spectacular pass. Another
good sign is that his shooting improved throughout his career, ending
his career as a legitimate 3-point threat. Quickness on defense is a
bit of a concern. Look for him to go early in the second round.

Page is yet another textbook example that John Thompson should stick to
coaching big men. He is another in a long line of very selfish guards
to come out of this otherwise fine institution, in the "tradition" of
Allen Iverson, "Sleepy" Floyd, and Reggie Williams. On the bright side,
he is a two, so he shouldn't have as much of an opportunity to alienate
his teammates as say, Iverson has.

Don't get me wrong. He does have offensive skills. He is very creative
in the open floor, at least as far as finding his own shot (which is all
I've ever seen him do), and he is a natural coming off screens to free
himself up for the outside shot. Also, he is extremely streaky, so he
can put up HUGE numbers when he's on, and he is a passable 3-pt shooter.
His biggest problem is that he shoots like he's always in the zone, and
thus has put up some horrific stat lines over the course of his short
career. He also needs the ball in his hands to be at all effective,
something which will not happen much with him probably spending most of
his first couple of years on the bench, assuming of course that he gets
drafted at all. He would probably be a little more attractive if he
could handle the ball a little better, so that he could at least slide
over to the point on occasion, but his assist-to-turnover ratio is as
terrible as his shooting percentage. Also, his free-throw percentage is
not a high as it should be for someone with his shooting ability.

Defensively, he is decent but not great. He has good lateral quickness,
and the ability to stay with his man, but gambles a little too much.
Granted, he does come up with his share of steals, but I wouldn't call
him a defensive stopper in any sense. Also, his size is an obvious
problem at the two spot (I dread ever having to see him guard Mercer, or
Heaven forbid, MJ).

Overall, I see him as a Rex Chapman without the athleticism or a Vernon
Maxwell without the defensive tenacity. He does have some ability,
though, and with a lot of work, better shot selection, and solid NBA
coaching, he could develop into a solid combination guard, a la Joe
Dumars.

Poop (Scout: Ken Bowers)
Gray improved almost every aspect of his game between his junior
and senior years, and turned himself from a streaky bench threat
into a dominant scorer and a guy who will get at a decent look
from an NBA team.

Strengths: Knows how to score. Good on the break and in traffic,
gets his shot off quickly, adjusts well coming off a pick, strong
and a good leaper, gets to the line and makes FTs.

Weaknesses: Only 6'3" and doesn't have PG skills; not a great
outside shooter; even with defensive improvement he's far from
a stopper.

A year ago, I wouldn't have thought Gray had any hope of making
an NBA roster. His improvements in shot selection, passing and
defense have changed my mind--if he continues to grow he should
become an NBA contributer. I don't think he'll be able to
convert to PG; a more likely path is to develop a viable NBA
three and become an instant-offense guard off the bench.

Since Gray's season ended with a foot injury, his performance
at the predraft camps will determine whether any teams are
willing to spend a pick getting him.

Bubba is probably my favorite "sleeper" prospect. His frame
reminds me of "Blue" Edwards, but his offensive skills remind
me of Mitch Ritchmond. He probably won't be selected in the
Usenet Mock Draft, but he'll be a "steal" in the second round
of the N.B.A. Draft.

James Collins-- A streak shooter, without a lot else to recommmend
him. The whole FSU team gambled on defense a lot, so his steals totals
are a bit inflated...

Best he can be: Deep bench player, used as a fourth guard by a team
that needs a shooter in that role.
Worst he can be: "Now you see, sir, 'term' insurance means..."

NBA.com Profile
Poop (Scout: Dennis R. Pascual Jr.)
Charles Smith is an exciting player who will be a steal in the second
round of the draft. The "Spider" is known mainly for his great dunks,
but Charles also has decent three point range, and was relied upon at
UNM to be the "money" player in crunch time. Charles has tremendous
leaping ability and abnormally long arms, but is affected by his rather
average speed. His dribbling skills are average, favoring the right
hand, and his favorite move is to beat the defender baseline and dunk
from several feet away. In the NBA however, this feat is a little
tougher to perform than against WAC foes. Charles has a limited short
range jumper, preferring to beat defenders off the dribble. Charles
made the all defensive team in the WAC, mainly due to the high number of
steals he recorded. Other than steals however, his defensive skills are
below average, and he gambles too much for the steal.

Charles future in the NBA will probably be as the first or second man
off the bench, a designated scorer. Charles can play, but he needs to
improve the fundamentals of his game to get the playing time.

This senior 2 guard started alongside Jason Kidd at Cal before transfering to
Kansas after one season. Jerod Haase is a good pure shooter and a solid
defender, but not much else. He's played great at times, but has never benn
consistently good. In his sophomore year at Kansas he led the Jayhawks in
scoring and three point shooting, but hasn't regained his poise over the past
two years. He's a good player and his defense has gotten much better during
his college career, but it doesn't look like his game will get much better
then it already is. He'll be lucky if he gets drafted.

Jeff Capel-- Too short and unable to generate his own shot to play
shooting guard, too score-oriented and makes awful decisions with the
ball and so can't play point guard. Might get drafted because his 10
best games were at the end of his senior year.

Not ridiculous to think he could go to the CBA and make himself into a
back-up point guard. But more likely this bright guy will end up a
coach like his daddy...

Ronnie Fields would probably be starting on ANY college team in the
country if he were eligible, but since he isn't, he had to play for
Rockford in the CBA last year. He was a high school teammate of Kevin
Garnett's and was thinking of going straight pro until he got into a bad
car accident his senior year. In his senior year, Ronnie had 4 fouls. He
got a steal and his opponent tried to take a charge. So what did he do?
He jumped OVER his opponent and dunked it home.
Poop (Scout: JCash34@aol.com)
Fields signed a letter of intent to play college ball at DePaul University,
but failed to qualify academically. Rather than sitting out one season as a
Prop 48, and possibly becoming the best guard in college, he decided to take
his chances in the CBA. Averaging just 7.4 ppg and playing a limited role
with the Rockford Lightning last season, Fields, like most other
underclassmen, is not ready for the NBA mainly because he proved he wasn't
ready for the CBA. He has great potential as a shooting guard, but should've
stuck with college where he could've been a star. I see him having a long
and possibly prosperous career in the CBA, or saving Michael Jordan a seat on
the bench.
