Scouting Report: Russ Smith
Strengths- Versatile, can handle the ball well, better shooter than he got a chance to show at UCLA. Developed a low post game in college. Played totally out of position as a senior at C and did quite well at it.

Weaknesses- Not strong enough to play inside, not quick enough to play outside, really needed to play SF last year to show NBA scouts he could do it, but the team needed him inside. Tends to shoot set shots and has never really shown he can shoot a jumper, may not get his shot off in the NBA as easily. Has a real temper, lets it get him in foul trouble. He's not lazy as some say, but he's not the most coachable guy either. I think he's a classic tweener, on a good team he can help, but a bad team that needs alot from him right away he just won't get it done.

After UCLA won the championship in '95 I attended a student Q&A session with then coaches Harrick and Lorenzo Romar. Both had said at the time J.R. was the best ballhandler on the team, including Tyus Edney. Perhaps an overstated compliment, but J.R. is a very good ball handler for his size. He can drive in, but I've never seen him jump very high, which is why all his shots were blocked by the Kentucky frontline. J.R. shoots set shots when he's open. But right now he's still too skinny to be a legit NBA small forward. He did have to play the 5 this year and the 4 last year. As for his attitude, J.R. could use some vets or a tough coach to get him motivated. I think he never got to showcase his true skills J.R. will be the best NBA player of the 95 championship squad. I'd like to think of him as the poorman's Shareef Abdur Rahim, but that's stretching it. J.R. has no leadership qualities. J.R. would be a good choice in this year's draft somewhere after the 17th pick
