II Season Recap:
In what was considered a "rebuilding year" the Spurs went 58-24 and had the 2nd best record in the West behind the Kings and tied for 2nd in the NBA with the Lakers.
Tim Duncan proved he is the best PF in the league by averaging 25.5 ppg (5th in the NBA) and pulling down 12.7 RPG (2nd in the NBA behind Wallace). He also easily led the league with 67 double-doubles. He captured the heavily-debated league MVP. He led a team that would have been nowhere without him, averaged 25.5/13, 67 double-doubles, there is no question, he is the real deal and deserving of the MVP award. A nice surprise this year for the Spurs was 19-year old French sensation
Tony Parker at PG. He averaged 9.3 PPG (8th among rookies) and 4.3 APG (2nd among rookies). In the playoffs the Spurs blew the SuperSonics in out in the deciding game 5 in the first round. In Round 2 they once again fell victim to Kobe and the Lakers.

IV. Coaching/Management:
Two transactions stand out. Anderson for Smith and drafting Tony Parker. I've had different opinions about Smith for Anderson. To start off they didn't save any money from the deal. In fact, Anderson make $1 mil less. It's not a horribly unbalanced trade but I think in the end the Spurs would've been better off keeping DA. From that you go to the steal of Tony Parker. A young, solid PG who can be there PG for the next 20 years. The point and PF are set, what's next?
V. Draft History:
- 2001 Parker (28) Bracey (58)
- 2000 Corey Hightower (54)
- 1999 Leon Smith (29, traded for Gordon Giricek and furture pick) Emmanuel Ginobeli (57)
- 1998 Felipe Lopez (24, traded for Antonio Daniels) Derrick Dial (52)
- 1997 Tim Duncan (1)
- 1996 ------
- 1995 Cory Alexander (29)
As you can see the Spurs have had trouble getting picks as of late. They've only made 2 good picks in the last 7 years (TParker and Duncan) but those two players are an MVP and a solid 1.
VI. Team Needs:
Center, Scoring SG
VII. My Selection
Jamal
Sampson, C, 6'11", Cal
Another player full of potential. This 19 year old will take time to develop but could become a premier center and help slow down Shaq with TD. With Robinson leaving after this season they need to get someone to eventually fill his shoes. Malik Rose isn't that long term answer.
VIII. Other considerations
Jason Jennings, C, Arkansas State
Roger Mason, SG, Virginia
Casey Jacobsen, SG, Stanford
Dan Gadzurik, C, UCLA
Nenad Krstic, C, Yugoslavia
Rod Grizzard, SG/SF, Alabama
Freddy Jones, SG, Oregon
IX. Who they'll take
You can't easily predict unless you know who's left on the board after the first 25 picks. I think Sampson would make perfect sense for the Spurs if they're willing to wait and if he's left. One thing that's for sure is the Spurs aren't afraid to draft young, draft international, or draft young-internationals like last year. It will be an interesting pick.
