Mission: The Minnesota Project addresses issues of rural communities that cross a broad range of environmental concerns. Since 1979, the organization has assisted rural leaders as they build their community's capacity to address issues of sustainability or natural resource management.

The Minnesota Project brings rural leaders and the rural perspective into national and statewide policy development. Current program areas are sustainable agriculture and water quality; renewable energy development; community sustainability; river protection; and sustainable forestry.

We provide leadership to a number of collaborative efforts in sustainable ag:
  • Loni Kemp is Co-Chair of the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture.
  • Beth Waterhouse chairs the Sustainers Coalition, providing guidance to the University of Minnesota.
  • Loni Kemp is past-chair of the board of the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture.
  • Loni Kemp is project coordinator for the Sustainable Agriculture Systems project, a $500,000 joint University/non-profit/farmer research project documenting impacts on water and soil quality.
  • John Lamb is coordinator of the Great Lakes Farm Planning Network, a joint effort in six states and Ontario to demonstrate the value of whole farm planning.
