Okay, so what the heck is GIGO?

GIGO is the UNC Student High-Tech Interest Club. Specifically, a club that deals with exploring, and exploiting the Internet. GIGO is a means in which students can find out about this vast resource called the Internet from other students who are knowledgeable, and a lot more available than say, a professor.

GIGO is not just limited to the UNC campus, though. We have sister organizations at other colleges, as well as members from other institutions in our local chapter. The idea is that through the Internet, we can all function as one organization with a common bond.

On the UNC campus, GIGO has meetings every Monday night in Phillips Hall, Room 330, officially from 8 until whenever.

We also sponsor open Internet sessions in Greenlaw lab, Tuesday and Thursday night. During this time, we occupy and staff the lab, giving internet activity priority over academic work in G'law. Students of all levels of expertise can come out and sample (read as: play with) the many programs, services, and whatever else you can find or create, FREE of charge. We have general discussions and speakers on various topics, from electronic libraries to the latest game for your PC. The range of it all is limited only by your imagination.

We also use these nights to sponsor Internet help sessions and introduction sessions for people new to the Internet for specific Departments and Student Groups on campus, free of charge. Groups this year that have arranged for these sessions include SEAC (Student Environmental Action Coalition,) and the Journalism School. If your department or organization might be interested in a arranging a session like this, contact Stephanie Beck, (steph@email.unc.edu) for more information.

The UNC chapter has its official pages including the constitution and by-laws on the World Wide Web for browsing, so have a gander.

For more information about any aspect of GIGO, contact current president Melissa Saurborn, or club co-founder Michael Williams.
