Bullock's Bar B Cue

3330 Wortham (off Hillsborough Street), Durham (919) 383-3211

When you finaly get to the head of the line--and there's always a line at Bullock's--the first thing you see is a wall full of photos of the stars. Yep, if you're famous and in Durham, then you're probably at Bullock's. (Unless, of course, you are the Jewish Messiah, in which case you're probably cruising the smoked fish aisle at Wellspring).

Oh yes, the size and quality of pork at Bullock's are as considerable as that picture of Dolly they've got on the wall (and she's looking MIGHTY healthy). They serve a tender, succulent pig--perhaps the finest in the Triangle. And although I haven't asked, I'm pretty certain they cook THE white meat with wood, not 'lectricity, because Porky has a nice, smoky flavor. Some of the best hush puppies I've eaten, passable sides (Hobgood's got them beat on this count), and a just-OK-but-not-great sauce characterize the Bullock's experience. In fact, Bullock's really should re-think its sauce position; at least 59.7% of those polled agreed that they would vote for another sauce in the upcoming primaries. But, again, the pig is REAL tasty at Bullock's, and they make some pretty pig-alicious ribs, to boot.

One final note. The decor at Bullock's is so atrocious that I haven't yet figured out if that's a good or a bad thing. --The Mayor

The wallpaper/carpet combination reminds me a lot of that room that my grandmother threw all us chillen in before dinner on Sundays to segregate us from the adults' church gossip. The green beans and coleslaw were also reminiscent of Sunday dinner at grandma's. Fortunately, the barbeque was not--it was yummy! I suggested to The Mayor that we buy sauce from Hobgood's and put it on the pork at Bullock's for the best combo within reasonable driving distance. He told me that would be gauche. Oh well. --Alec
