BICYCLING IN NORTH CAROLINA

Bike Centennial (P.O. Box 8308, Missoula, MT 59807; 406/721-1776): Publishes three bicycle route maps for N.C.: a coastal route (part of an eastern seaboard route); a route between Wilmington and Richmond, Virginia; and a route between Wilmington and Statesboro, Georgia (which are part of a Virginia-to-Florida route). The maps include information such as special attractions and local bike laws.

N.C. DOT - Bicycle Program (Box 25201, Raleigh 27611; 919/733-2804): Distributes a brochure and maps for N.C.'s 10 major bicycling highway routes, which cover 3,000 miles of country roads and often parallel heavily car-travelled highways. A brochure illustrates the routes, and separate maps give information on terrain, road conditions, services, and points of interest. A campground directory for the routes is also available. The program also provides maps for eight regional/local routes. A list of maps and other publications is available.
