MONITORING SURFACE WATERS

N.C. Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources:

Coastal Management Division (225 N. McDowell St., Raleigh 27603; 919/733-2293): Coordinates and provides information on Big Sweep activities. Volunteers clean up along all waterways of N.C. Numerous organizations are involved across the state. Activities are coordinated by Divisions of Coastal Management, Water Resources, and Parks and Recreation.

Water Resources Division - Stream Watch Coordinator (P.O. Box 27687, Raleigh 27611-7687; 919/733-4064): Coordinates stream watch activities. Organizations "adopt" and monitor a section of a stream, river, or lake. 200 organizations are currently involved. Publishes the newsletter Streamwatch News and a book called A Guide to Streamwalking;. Plans to publish Stream Watch Action Guide , a book on chemical and biological monitoring, stream history, and "who to call" within government bureaucracy.

UNC-Asheville Environmental Quality Institute - Water Information Network> (c/o Richard Maas, Asheville 28804; 704/251-6441): A stream watch program. Volunteers periodically collect water samples and either send or deliver them to the Institute, which tests the samples for contaminants and prepares reports on the results. At present five counties are involved, however the Institute is interested in expanding the program to other counties across N.C. Organizations, individuals, and county governments can initiate programs.
