What did Hoover do before he was President?He was a successful mining engineer and businessman until he began his public service work in 1914. After heading the Commission for Relief in Belgium, he was U.S. Food Administrator from 1917 - 1919; Secretary of Commerce from 1921 - 1928 under Coolidge and Harding. During this time he was also chairman of many committees and commissions.

Mr. Hoover devoted his post-presidential years to a wide range of civic and humanitarian causes. He was honorary chair of the Boys Clubs of America, a cofounder of UNICEF and CARE, and chairman of two commissions reorganizing the Federal government. He also wrote 40+ books and gave many speeches on a wide range of public issues.
When did Hoover die?On October 20, 1964 he died at the age of 90.

President Hoover married Miss Lou Henry in 1899. She had met Hoover at Stanford University where they were both students in the geology department.

The Hoovers had two children. Herbert, Jr. was born in London in 1903. Allan was born in London in 1907. Both are deceased.

Where are the Hoovers buried?On a hill overlooking the birthplace cottage on the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branches Iowa.
