Call for IPM innovators, less toxic pest control, nominate for award
For your info - about the program - and possibly someone in California that
you know could be nominated for award (someone can nominate themself)...
seems a good way to encourage the good guys and create models with those

CALL GOES OUT FOR INNOVATORS
SACRAMENTO -- Cal/EPA's Department of Pesticide Regulation is putting
out a call for innovators.
*We are looking for organizations and companies that are finding
resourceful, ingenious new ways to fight pests,* said James W. Wells,
DPR Director. *We would like to recognize their skill and motivation with
one of our IPM Innovator awards.*
"IPM Innovators* are leaders in adopting techniques that increase
the benefits and reduce the risks of pest control. IPM, or integrated pest
management, is an approach to managing pests that combines biological,
cultural, physical, and chemical tools, choosing a method or combination
of methods that is effective and is the least disruptive to the
environment.
DPR established its IPM Innovator program in 1994 to encourage
*cooperative, local problem-solving because it creates a climate where
growers are better informed and more willing to try the IPM practices that
work," said Wells. "Our goal has been to honor those who lead the way
and to encourage others to form groups to work out solutions to their
own unique, local pest management problems."
Since 1994, awards have been presented to 14 agricultural
innovators and 13 non-agricultural groups that developed innovative
solutions to pest problems in urban settings.
Individuals can nominate their own organization or another group
or company as an IPM Innovator. Nominations are due by June 16, 1997,
with awards to be presented this fall.
Nomination forms can be obtained from DPR's Internet Web site
(www.cdpr.ca.gov), from the Department by calling the Environmental
Monitoring and Pest Management Branch, 916/324-4100, or by sending
an E-mail request (info@cdpr.ca.gov).
Award recipients must use pest management systems that
reduce the risk posed by some traditional pest control methods. These
systems must have a history of economically viable operation and must
be documented so that others can learn and apply them to their own
situation. The recipient must also have a program to share technical
information outside the group and a research effort to continue its
innovations.
