Greetings. I work as forage crop specialist in the Fraser Valley of B.C., the main dairying area of the province. Our dairymen use a lot of plastic in producing their grass silage. This includes round bale wrap, sheeting for covering bunkers, Ag Bags, etc. In addition, there is more plastic used in other areas of production,ie greenhouses, field vegetables, etc. Last summer my student did some preliminary work to determine amount of plastic used, present methods of disposal, farmers' attitudes toward recycling, etc. There is a great deal of support for getting a recycling system in place. We have several firms locally that can accept our type of plastic and make it into such things as plastic lumber. Major problems at this point are cleanliness of the plastic, tipping fees at the recycler, the mechanics of a collection system, buyback of finished product from the plastic lumber manufacturer, etc. I would appreciate any information on similar programs, problems or solutions encountered, or contacts for further information. Thanks very much. Don Bates Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food 45850 #F Yale Road Chilliwack B.C. V2P 2N9 Canada
