Land control
Here in upstate New York we have plenty of idled land that could be used
for pasture. This will continue to be the case as the dairy industry
continues to realign on farms with better soil resources. We have talked
about the value of MIG till most are tired of hearing, mainly because so
many producers have adopted some type of MIG. What we have not talked
about is gaining control of the land. Most of these idled acres are with
out fince and water development. I am interested in putting together some
educational materials and perhaps a seminar on methods of land
acquisition. Topics to be addressed:
How to approach a land owner to gain permission to graze.
Determining a fair rate to charge/pay for this land
If leased, how long should the lease be?
How much does it cost to fence??
What methods are currently being used to gain use of idled land
Values to landowner to encourage livestock grazing
I'm convinced that in many cases owning the land is not profitable for the
livestock producer. He/she needs to control the land but not own it. In
NY, we are fortunate to have the availability of this idled land.
Has anyone facilitated such a program or develped any materials? Are
there resources that I could use to help put this together? I can easily
envision a planning committer that consists of producers, landowners, ag
preservationists, ag use assessment personnel, Forage and Grassland
councles, etc.
ANy suggestions would be most appreciated.
Mike
