Re: Forage production costs and pricing strategies

crop budgets from Pennsylvania, on Penn Pages are the best source of crop
input cost for the Northeast. Cornell quit doing that survey a few years
back and we sure miss it.
Most folks selling forages around here tie most of the price to the value
of protein as represented on Soybean Meal. That makes up the bulk of the
price. It is very tough to get dairymen to pay what forages are worth, no
matter what formulae you try. If they put it up themselves it is worth a
lot, if some one else puts it up they try to buy it as cheap as possible.
Prices at NYS hay auctions do not reflect the RF value of the forages.
Color and no dust are most of the price at our auctions. Good luck.
