floods and hay

Friends,

I am working on several articles for our local Extension newsletter
addressing the impact of our recent flooding on forages and
livestock. One of the many problems to address is what folks can
expect from hay which was soaked with flood water while stacked in
their barns. I want to cover all the bases so what about:

-- impact on humans handling hay soaked with contaminated water (or
livestock eating it);

-- spontaneous combustion;

-- what about mold (it will come but what about details) ;

-- are there any methods of salvaging the wet hay (feed it
immediately?);

-- if only the lower bales are wet can they do nothing at all without
jeprodizing the entire stack (will it fall over, spread strange
smells and spores, etc);

-- and anything else you think of.

Thanks,
