Seeking Apprentice for the 1997 Season.

Contact: Jonathan Moscatello, 301.627.4393, FGU3@AOL.COM
Clagget Farm Center, 11904 Old Marlboro Pike, Upper Marlboro, MD.
20772.

An individual interested in organic vegetable culture, community
development, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is needed
to fill a position within "From the Ground Up", a project of the
Capital Area Community Food Bank, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation,
and the Chesapeake CSA organization.

This project involves a 250 share, direct membership farm, and
four farmstands in low income, Washington, DC neighborhoods.
Farmstands are operated by four DC community groups for nutrition
education purposes, and to make available fresh, low-cost
vegetables where no neighborhood fresh vegetable retailers exist.
The direct shareholders and community group participants take an
active, equal role with the farm managers in planning and
operating the food system functions.

Our 15 acre market garden uses organic vegetable production
methods to produce vegetables from May to November. Apprentices
are compensated one of the highest stipends in the industry
(w/housing), and given a hands on experience in cultivation, farm
operation management, machinery operation and maintenance, and
basic plant science. Additionally, apprentices will participate
in Chesapeake Bay Foundation education trips on and around the
Bay. Our farm is located 20 miles east of Washington on the
Foundations Clagget Farm Center, a 300 acre former tobacco
plantation dating from 1830. The farm now serves as a working
example of sustainable agricultural management, with several long
term experiments.
