Oregon Cover Crop Workshop




OSU OFFERS COVER CROP WORKSHOP ON MARCH 18, 1997


    CORVALLIS -The Oregon State University Extension Service and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture Western Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and
Education Program will offer a workshop on growing cover crops for soil
improvement, water quality and pest management on Tuesday, March 18 from 9:00 a.
m. to 4:30 p.m at the campus LaSells Stewart Center.
    The workshop, for growers and agricultural professionals, will focus on
multiple benefits of cover crops and on management practices for both annual and
perennial cropping systems, said John Luna, assistant professor of horticulture
at OSU.

  "OSU researchers and growers will discuss cover crops for nitrogen capture
and fixation and impacts on soil quality," said Luna. "We'll have practical
'nuts and bolts' discussions about cover crop selection and management
options, and the impacts of cover crops on weeds, pathogens, insect and
vertebrate pests, and
beneficial arthropods. There will also be a field tour of cover crop research
trials at the OSU Vegetable Research Farm."

  Workshop presenters include OSU College of Agriculture faculty including:
Extension agent Dan McGrath, soil scientist Richard Dick, crop scientist John
Luna, viticulturist Carmo Candolfi, horticulture researcher Ed Peachey,
nematologist Russ Ingham, Extension weed specialist Ray William, horticulturist
Del Hemphill, plant pathologist Marlys Cappaert and Extension small fruits
agent Diane Kaufman,  and OSU entomologist Andy Moldenke and Benton County
grower Peter Kenagy.
    The cover crop workshop registration fee is $35, which includes lunch and
