Sustainable Agriculture Network Opens Comprehensive Web Site
Electronic Pages Feature Searchable Publications, Research Database
BELTSVILLE, Md.- Farmers and ranchers, researchers, agricultural
professionals, students and consumers can access the latest information on
sustainable agriculture at a new, user-friendly web site maintained by the
Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN). The informative web site - which
features on-line books and a database of more than 1,000 research projects
funded by the USDA's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE)
program - is located at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/san/
Want to find a sustainable agriculture expert in your state? Visit the SAN
web site and search the third edition of the Sustainable Agriculture
Directory of Expertise, a book describing nearly 1,000 individuals and
more than 200 organizations throughout the United States and two of its
territories. Want to contact a researcher in your region who has conducted
trials on management-intensive grazing? Search the SARE database.
Considering applying for a SARE grant? Download a how-to page, or contact
a regional representative directly through the site's e-mail directory.
"We designed the SAN web site with the end user in mind," says Andy Clark,
SAN coordinator. SAN is the publications and outreach arm of SARE, USDA's
sustainable agriculture grants program. "We made it easy to access the
wealth of information coming from the SARE program and the sustainable
agriculture community at large."
Visitors to SAN's home page can conduct a site-wide topic search or link
to SAN's publications,the SARE database and media resources/announcements.
The web site also features:
* An online version of Managing Cover Crops Profitably, a farmer's guide
to successful use of cover crops;
* Sustainable agriculture materials developed for cooperative extension
and NRCS educators;
* Information about sanet-mg, SAN's e-mail discussion group and the
sanet-mg archive, a history of messages sent to the list;
* Links to other sustainable agriculture web sites; and
* Coming soon, the 1997 Source Book of Sustainable Agriculture, a guide to
sustainable ag materials in print, video and electronic formats.
SARE funds research and education projects that advance economically
viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible farming systems.
