          Sustainable Agriculture Program Associate

 The Altemative Energy Resources Organization (AERO) is seeking a qualified
person for a full-time, permanent position (3 years of secure funding) as
Sustainable Agriculture Program Associate.  Salary range is $17,000 to $18,500,
plus generous benefits.  

AERO is an activist, grassroots non-profit organization
working with people to promote sustainable agriculture; renewable energy and
conservation; and more livable communities.  The AERO staff is small, operates
as a team, and works directly with AERO members on a variety of activities.

Sustainable Agriculture Options Network Program.  

The Program Associate will work primarily with the Sustainable Agriculture
Options Network program.  AERO's project is part of the Kellogg Foundation's
national Integrated Farming Systems program.  The purpose of AERO's project is
to support and encourage sustainable fanning systems in the Northern Rockies
through a network of local farm improvement clubs.  The farm improvement clubs: 
(1) enable local groups of farmers and ranchers to meet their own needs for
information about sustainable agriculture; 

(2) build supportive networks of producers, agricultural service and research
personnel; 

(3) make practical information about sustainable aoculhire available to fanners
and ranchers, scientists and their institutions and policy makers; 

and (4) build a support community for farmers interested in implementing
sustainable practices. 

Major job Responsibilities
* Provide technical and organizational assistance to 22 farm
improvement clubs throughout Montana.
* Administer small grants to farm improvement clubs.

* Cultivate potential clubs and respond to Wormation requests      from clubs and
individual farmers and ranchers.

* Work collaboratively with the Sustainable Options Network        program
steering committee.

* Serve as a clearinghouse for club information, activities and  resources.
  
* Generate media about the program.

* Organize farm tours and public eventb-.

* Desseminate club-generated information to the general            agricultural,
rural and academic communities.

* Write grant proposals.

* Recruit new AERO members.

* Work collaboratively with other Montana agricultural organizations and public
agencies.

* Participate in major AERO organizational activities and events.

Job Requirements and Qualifications
*Technical knowledge and practical experience in sustainable      agriculture.

* Commitment to the philosophy and goals of sustainable            agriculture.
 
* experience working with a grassroots non-profit (2 years          minimum)

* Credibility with farmers and ranchers in one-on-one              interactions.

* Excellent writing and editing skills.

* Reliable car and willingness to travel extensively in Montana.

* Project management experience.
* Word processing skills (Macintosh preferred).

* Experience In grant writing and grassroot fundraising            (preferred).

* Media and outreach experience: ability to write news releases,   articles and
be interviewed.

* Ability to work in project teams, with AERO staff and members.
