Briefly, ginseng requires cool temperate conditions, about 70% shade,
and good, well-drained soil. Time to harvest takes four years. The
seed must be stratified one year and does not tolerate dessication.
There are several books you might want to look at:
1. American Ginseng, Green Gold. W. Scott Persons. This is a
grower's guide covering every facet of production and
marketing. 203 pp. Softcover.
2. Ginseng and Other Medicinal Plants. Harding. Although written
in 1914, it is still a worthwhile investment with lots of
hands-on information for commercial growers. Also covers
goldenseal and other North American woodland herbs. 385 pp.
Softcover.
Both are available from Richters.
