NEW BOOK ON GROWING HEALTHY FRUIT TREES USING LESS PESTICIDES

The new, revised edition of "Orchard Almanac: A Seasonal Guide to
Healthy Fruit Trees," by Steve Page and Joseph Smillie, is now available.
This practical handbook is a useful tool for commercial orchardists and
backyard fruit growers who want to grow healthy fruit trees using less
pesticides.

The authors explain a strict organic approach, as well as integrated
pest management techniques that emphasize using the least possible amount
of pesticides. This information will help farmers increase profits by
reducing chemical use and by getting higher prices for their unsprayed
fruit.

Organized around the seasons, "Orchard Almanac" delivers clear,
specific advice on planting and maintaining the orchard. With a
month-by-month format , the almanac explains sanitation and close
monitoring of trees to prevent or minimize pest infestations. Techniques of
integrated pest management, biological control and safe chemical control
are demystified. The book includes lots of specific information on using
fungicides and pesticides, with an emphasis on organic materials, in a
context of understanding the orchard ecosystem.

In the unique and easy-to-follow seasonal format, the authors also
discuss planting and pruning, soil and foliar fertilization, new
disease-resistant varieties, restoration of old fruit trees, harvest,
storage, and all aspects of caring for your orchard throughout the year.

The authors are orchardists themselves, and draw upon their many years
of experience working on their own farms and serving as consultants to
small-scale and commercial growers. They have included appendices that
include a bibliography, a directory of suppliers and insectaries, listings
of orchard related organizations, and a set of tables with formulation of
various pest control materials.
