GLOBAL ENERGY MARKETPLACE (GEM) YOUR LINK TO ENERGY INFO

There is no doubt that the Internet is improving global information
exchange. The problem is that all too often, it is difficult
to find the good information, the "gems" that make the hours spent
searching online worthwhile.

A new federally-funded project called the Global Energy Marketplace
(GEM) uses the Internet to help users quickly find information
about the production and implementation of ecologically sustainable
energy services worldwide. By searching, cataloguing, reviewing,
and linking to thousands of energy- and export-related sites on the
Internet, GEM will facilitate global commerce in clean energy
technologies.

The project is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, Economy and Environment Division (EED of the Office of
Policy, Planning and Evaluation). Additional support is provided by
the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and
Renewable Energy; the U.S.Agency for International Development,
Office of Energy, Environment and Technology; and the Educational
Foundation of America.

GEM's mission is to provide a detailed index on energy information
to organize its growing virtual library. GEM accumulates
information about the energy situation in various countries, and
efforts to move toward an ecologically sustainable energy system.
GEM supplies a complete library to aid research in renewable energy
and energy efficiency development and commerce.

GEM is designed to save people time and money in locating case
studies, documents, contacts, country profiles, and other relevant
information sources about energy efficiency and renewable energy in
an indexed and searchable format. Currently, GEM has over 1,200
links to sites all over the internet, as well as providing reports
and documents previously unavailable in electronic form. It
includes profiles and reports on the world energy situation, a list
of experts, and directories of organizations specializing in
asessements, financing, products, research, and development.

CREST will house GEM on its popular World Wide Web site, Solstice.
GEM can be found at http://solstice.crest.org/sustainable/gem/.
CREST will keep the information up-to-date by continually updating
existing data, linking to other Internet sites, and seeking
contributions from its users of reports, documents, programs, and
other information of value to the global energy market.
