Dear Colleagues of Crop Improvement, Crop and Soils Management and
Information Technology Management,

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is taking
special action to identify qualified applicants from vhnon-represented
countriesFB for open positions. This communication is in reference to the
cropping systems/information management expert post described below that was
announced in 1996.

Member countries of FAO having no staff working at FAO (non-represented)
include the following: Albania, Angola, Antigua & Barbuda, Armenia, Bahrain,
Bhutan, Bosnia/Hertzegovina, Cape Verde, Cook Islands, Czech Republic, El
Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Estonia, Georgia, Guinea, Iceland, Kuwait,
Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Lesotho, Lithuania, Macedonia, Maldives, Malta,
Mauritania, Moldova, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Oman, Paraguay, Qatar, Saint Kitts
& Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Sao Tome & Principe,
Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates,
Vanuatu and Yugoslavia.

Background
The Crop and Grassland Service (AGPC) of the Food and Agriculture
Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is exploring ways to work with
partners both within FAO and outside of FAO to strengthen information
acquisition and distribution concerning improved crop, soil and water
management technologies for enhancing sustainable agricultural production
systems.

To this end, a new post has been created in AGPC for a Cropping Systems
Agronomist with experience in developing country agriculture and having a
strong orientation toward modern information management.

POST DESCRIPTION: CROPPING SYSTEMS AGRONOMIST-INFORMATION MANAGEMENT EXPERT
General Statement:
The incumbent will: Provide information and advice to member governments on
means to enhance sustainable crop production systems; provide leadership for
development of Modern Information Management systems related to crop
management technologies to be developed in partnership with staff from FAO
and other institutions; provide leadership for electronic conferences to be
created and managed on selected topics regarding crop improvement and
management; synthesise information on cropping systems management and related
information systems; develop training materials related to integrated crop
management; perform other related duties.

Specifics:
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Officer leading the Field Food
Crops Group and under the overall direction of the Chief of the Crop and
Grassland Service, the incumbent will perform a range of tasks to strengthen
the Agricultural Department's capacity to provide timely information of the
highest quality on integrated crop management technologies. The incumbent
will:
Acquire existing data bases on crop production and related technologies and
develop a user-friendly information management system with a GIS linkage;
Coordinate through joint planning sessions the efforts of partners e.g., AGP,
AGL, AGS, IAEA, IARCs, NARES, NGOs, etc.) involved in developing the
Compendium of Crop Production Technologies;
Select and direct the Monitors of electronic Newsgroups which are to be
established for interactive information exchanges on crop production
technologies;
Prepare reports synthesising information on cropping systems management and
on the status of the related integrated information system;
Provide advice to member governments on means to enhance sustainable crop
production systems;
Advise on the strengthening of electronic information exchange capabilities
in developing countries for use by agricultural research and development
experts including NGOs;
Prepare training materials and other hard-copy publications on crop
management systems;
Lead development in AGP of on-line information exchanges and fora on improved
management systems;
Perform other related duties.

EXPERIENCE
Seven years of progressively responsible and professional experience in crop
management technologies with experience in agricultural development in the
tropics and/or subtropics including developing countries;
Extensive experience in computer use related to data base development,
spreadsheets, and word processing;
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team as well as take
responsibilities for tasks with minimal supervision
