Two family peaks:
- Emil Strub, my great-grandfather, designed and built many of the funiculars and cog railways in Europe at the turn of the last centrury. Above Interlaken in Switzerland his Jungfraubahn bores through the Eiger until it reaches the saddle below the peak of the Jungfrau. He invented a cog railway system that is still in use today. I have his pickaxe. It is inscribed "Jungfraubahn Director Strub".
- Cordelia Strube, my baby sister, wrote the novels Alex and Zee and Milton's Elements to explore her characters' strengths via their weaknesses in straight-from-the-shoulder prose. Harper-Collins published Teaching Pigs to Sing in August 1996.
