WATER CONSERVATION,
GETTING THE MOST EFFICIENT USE OF YOUR WATERING
Trees and Shrubs
Water trees and shrubs regularly for the first one to two years until they are established. Apply mulch over the watering area to reduce surface evaporation. The top 2 - 3 inches of soil should stay moist enough to form a ball when squeezed in your hand. If the soil is dry, add water to wet the top 6 - 8 inches, then do not water until the soil dries.
Mature trees have feeder roots that extend out as far as the tree is tall. The trees should be watered in this area, not at the trunk.
Stop watering trees and shrubs in September and October as they begin to lose their leaves to allow the trees to harden for winter. Once all the leaves have fallen, water deeply prior to freeze up.
LAWN
Once lawns are established, give them a deep watering every seven to ten days. This will encourage deep rooting and make them more tolerant to drought, wear, cold, and heat stress.
Calculate how much extra water your lawn or garden needs by subtracting the amount of rainfall in the last seven days from the amount of water needed by plants. In normal conditions, 1/2 inch of water per week (including rainfall) is ALL that your lawn, flowers and garden need. In hot weather 1 inch of water per week is necessary.
To calculate how long it takes to apply certain amounts of water, refer to the chart at the below. Before you use the chart, determine how much water your sprinkler produces in 15 minutes.
Put three pie plates on your lawn. Turn the sprinkler on for 15 minutes. Pour the contents of the pans into one pan and measure the depth of the water with a ruler. Divide by three. This is your "sprinkler output" in 15 minutes. Find the corresponding amounts you have watered to the number of minutes to water.
OBSERVE YOUR LOCAL WATERING GUIDELINES
(The following are for Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada)
Follow the odd-even street address watering guidelines. Pick one day a week. Odd numbered street addresses water on Mondays, Thursdays OR Saturdays. Even numbered addresses water on Tuesdays, Fridays OR Sundays.
Water before 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m. to limit evaporation.
Water in as calm conditions as possible. Don't throw water in the wind!

and Debbie: July 20, 1996 I live in San Diego, California and I had a lush pumpkin vine for a few months. In the last few weeks though, it seems to be rapidly dying. At first, the center of the vine turned yellow and then brown and died. Then, the browning spread outward, killing the vine. Almost my whole plant is gone now, and I don' t know how to save it, can you help me? Thank you so much, Debbie. |
| AOL.COM August 10, 1996 Subject: When do I expect to get fruit? Hello, I planted 2 varieties of pumpkins during the second week of May. One is "Big Max" the other is "Jack-o-lantern". The leaves and vines are quite lush and are thriving. The plants are blossoming but there is no sign of any fruit. Is there a problem? When should I expect to see some? Thanks, Jennifer S. |
