The NCSU Arboretum

I regret to inform friends of the NCSU Arboretum of the death of Dr. J. C. Raulston, Founding Director of the Arboretum, in an automobile accident on December 21, 1996 at 11:30 p.m. in Ramseur, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 19, 1997, 2 p.m. at the McKimmon Center on the NCSU Campus. In lieu of flowers, please support the Education Center with a donation made payable to "The NC Agricultural Foundation" with a memo line "Arboretum Building Fund" mailed to the NCSU Department of Horticulture, Box 7609, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, 27695-7609.

The mission of The NCSU Arboretum is to enrich and expand urban and residential landscapes by promoting a greater diversity of superior and better adapted landscape plants for creative, environmentally sound landscapes.

Present Programs

  1. Evaluation of plants in collection; addition of ca. 600 - 800 taxa per year.
  2. Distribute ca. 15,000 plants annually to nursery industry.
  3. Public Use - NCSU classes; community colleges; high school judging teams; Master Gardener tours - kindergarten to retirement; short courses and field days; nurserymen tours; TV filming. Approximately 100,000 visitors per year.
  4. Research use - many faculty in varied departments; plus graduate students and other institutions.
  5. Sharing with other arboreta and institutions - design, plant advisory and plants.
