COMMUNITY GARDENS AMERICORPS MEMBER
(o begin November 1998)
Background: "Beyond Food D.C.", an AmeriCorps program of the Congressional
Hunger Center, seeks experienced gardeners and composters for a year of
community service, beginning November 1998. Community Garden AmeriCorps
members will be placed with Garden Resources of Washington, a non-profit
organization.
Job Description: Members will work throughout Washington, DC to city residents
and community organizations in starting and maintaining community gardens for
the purpose of revitalizing neighborhoods, improving nutrition, lowering
family food costs, and promoting environmental stewardship. Members will
complete 1,700 hours of community service, working Tuesday through Saturday.
Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
- --working in diverse low-income neighborhoods with residents of all ages to
create and maintain community gardens
- --creating and maintaining gardening and composting demonstration sites
- --teaching gardening and composting to community residents of all ages
- --conducting community outreach and facilitating community meetings
- --recruiting and supervising volunteers
- --creating special events
- --developing newsletters
- --driving tools and other supplies to workdays
- --contacting local garden stores for their participation, driving to pickup
in-kind donations
Qualifications:
- --solid knowledge of organic gardening and composting
- --highly organized, creative, self-motivated, and flexible
- --excellent people skills
- --enjoys learning and teaching
- --experience supervising others
- --works effectively both independently and in a team
- --ability to sensitively facilitate community meetings
- --basic familiarity with computers
- --proven commitment to community service
- --valid driver's license
the following skills / knowledge are a plus:
- --carpentry, art, photography, videography, nutrition, cooking
Salary: This is a full-time position for approximately 11 months. There is a
living allowance of $8,340 plus child care, health care, and a travel
allowance of $50 per month. At the end of the year of service, members
receive an education award of $4,795 to be used for future tuition costs or
previously incurred student loans.
