A few years back, Dr. John Doran, USDA-ARS and Dr. Marianne Sarrantonio, then
with the Rodale Institute Research Center, were working on soil quality tests
that motivated farmers or ag professionals could conduct in the field. They
included things like infiltration rates, bulk density, water-holding
capacity, respiration, etc. See The New Farm magazine (Jan. '94, Feb. '94,
