Tell them to try planting their squash late in the season...mid to late
July. The only problem with late planting is that they might get hit by
squash bugs rather than borers. One way of dealing with the squash bugs
is to avoid mulch and cover the planting with row covers until the
female flowers appear.

It is a problem. I just buy my squash from the organic store or farmers
here in Philadelphia and grow other stuff.
