POSITION OPEN FOR ORGANIC FARMER TO MANAGE STUDENT-RUN COMMUNITY SUPPORTED
AGRICULTURE IN HANCOCK COUNTY, TENNESSEE.
The Clinch Powell Sustainable Development Initiative (CPDSI) is searching
for an organic grower to be the farm manager for the School Farm Project,
an innovative project developed by CPSDI member-group Jubilee Project and
Hancock County Schools. CPSDI is a ten-county economic development coalition
working for sustainable development in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest
Virginia.
The School Farm Project aims to establish a self-sustaining CSA on the prop-
erty of Hancock County High School in Hancock County, Tennessee. The project
is being organized by Jubilee Project, a local community development group,
and supervised by a coorddinating committee that includes the high school
agricultural instructor, the local NRCS agent, and two local chemical-free
growers. The farm will be used by the ag instructor with his classes and
will also incorporate two to four students as student-managers. The hope
is to enable youth to go on to be small-scale vegetable producers, possibly
even staarting their own CSAAa in Hancock County, a county with a long
tradition in agriculture.
The farm manager will be responsible for supervising the students as well
as helping guarantee the overall production of the farm. She or he will
also help to some degree with the education of the students following a
curriculum in sustainable agriculture. The farm manager will be an employee
of CPSDI on a contractual or salaried basis.
