Squirrels are good to eat. Anything in your garden is volunteering to be
harvested. Live traps spare other wildlife, though you may have to stop
trapping for a while if a skunk "gets wind" of it. They'll eat the bait and
then go to sleep, It is possible to release the catch on the trap so that
they will get out the next night, as they sleep all day, but the night after
that they'll be back in the trap. After a while, they get quite used to you
opening the catch in the daytime. Moving the trap to another area sometimes
works.

Meanwhile, if you catch a squirrel, about the most humane way to kill it is
to shoot it in the trap with some light sort of ammunition, taking care not
to wreck the trap. I've done this hundreds of times. Squirrel stew
surpasses any other kind I've eaten. Here in Florida, we have one endangered
squirrel species, the fox squirrel, and we just have to put up with the
damage as of course we are glad that theyare still around.. Most species,
especially in urban and suburban areas, are at infestation levels due to
removal of their natural predators. If you don't eat meat, you might know a
hungry student who does.
