Margaret Smith at Cornell (mes25@postoffice3.mail.cornell.edu) was
conducting some research several years ago on breeding and selecting field
corn varieties for minimum-till and no-till environments. A key to variety
performance was germination under colder soil temperatures - one of the
advantages of spring plowing are resulting warmer soils.
My work with Margaret dealt with breeding and selecting sweet corn
varieties for low nitrogen conditions. I believe Margaret has just renewed
this project.
If you are looking for references on breeding for nitrogen use efficiency
and low nitrogen environments, I would be more than happy to provide you
with the bibliography from my dissertation. An enormous amount of work has
been done on nitrogen in crop breeding and certainly my list of references
only skims the surface of the literature.
