I want to clear up any confusion that Beth's message may create:

What you've seen is an internal communication of the SAN Management
Committee. Beth mistakenly sent to sanet rather than to me (san). I'd
like to take this opportunity to describe briefly the Sustainable
Agriculture Network (SAN), and the Committee that helps to give direction
to SAN. Beth message refers to the number of SAN publications
distributed since July.

SAN was conceived and created in 1990 and 1991 as part of the USDA's SARE
program. Congress had mandated that information about sustainable
agriculture be disseminated. Dr. Patrick Madden, then Director of SARE,
convened a diverse group of people interested in sustainable agriculture
to work on communications and outreach about sustainable agriculture.
Specifically, Patrick wanted to help disseminate the results of SARE
projects as widely and as quickly as possible (as ONE objective of SAN).

That organizing committee became the SAN Management Committee. One of
the most visible results was the creation of sanet-mg, a discussion group
for sustainable agriculture. You as subscribers to sanet are part of the
Sustainable Agriculture Network!

The SAN Management Committee is a diverse group of university research,
extension personnel, farmers, agricultural consultants, and
communications specialists. The committee helps set direction for SAN's
outreach efforts. The committee decided to create sanet-mg, to publish
informational materials (in print, and electronically), and the committee
has worked to develop a SAN/SARE Home Page on the WWW.

Beth Holtzman is chair of the SAN Publications subcommittee. She is the
communications specialist for the Northeast Region of the SARE program.
Each of the 4 SARE regions have communications specialists, there is a
national communications specialist, and all five of them are members of
the SAN Committee. I am Coordinator of the Sustainable Agriculture
Network, and with the help of the communications specialists, and the
other 15 members of the SAN Committee, try to disseminate as much
information about sustainable agriculture as we are able.

The publications mentioned by Beth are SAN's major publications, all of
which are sold as cheaply as we can sell them to recover our costs, with
all additional income put directly back into more publications.

We are pleased to have sold more than 600 of our Sustainable Agriculture
Directory of Expertise, since those who purchased it now have contact
information for more than 700 groups and individuals who are *experts* in
some area of sustainable agriculture. This is the 3rd Edition of the
Directory of Expertise. The SAN Management Committee, particularly the
publications subcommittee, worked with our publisher to develop a
marketing plan for the Directory. It seems to be working.

To shorten this, the SAN Committee is the nuts and bolts behind sanet-mg
(which now runs itself), SAN's presence through its books and databases, and
its upcoming presence on the WWW.

I was asked to give a paper on SAN at the 4th Annual Datafication
Conference in May of 1996. The Proceedings of that conference, and my
overview of SAN and the SAN Committee (if you still want more
information about SAN) can be found at:

There is an exhaustive account of the SARE program called
History of the Sustainable Ag Research Ed Program. It is at:

You'll also find most of SAN's databases at the same URL.

Please contact me directly for more information about SAN.
