A reference you may find informative is Brewster Kneen's book From
Land to Mouth: Understanding the Food System, published by NC Press.
A very good intro to the (il)logic of the industrial food system.
Another fascinating treatment of the issue can be found in my just
completed thesis on urban agriculture, the most pithy bits I can send you if you're
interested.
