Breed improvement in dairy cows -Reply

New Brunswick has a deal to supply 50,000 dairy cows to Pakistan
(although the deal may be endangered by recent political turmoil there). I
don't know if these were intended just for milk production or whether
Pakistan was also going to try to incorporate them into a breeding
program. I'd hate to be an Eastern Canadian Holstein transplanted to
Pakistan unless there were air-conditioned barns!

On a related topic: Years ago, I read up on Water Buffalo production.
My recollection is that the dairy breeds of water buffalo produce a lot
less milk than a dairy cow, but that the solids (fat and protein) were
much higher -- enough higher that simple dilution with water would yield
comparable "milk" volume and solids composition to that from one of our
standard western dairy cows. I'm not suggesting dilution of anybody's
milk, but it struck me that much of our intensive dairy cow breeding over
the past decades has mostly allowed the cows to put through more
water. Do any Sanetters have a more informed perspective on this?
